Wii

Disney Infinity is off to a strong start in the US. According to data provided by the NPD Group, the new game sold 294,000 units in its first month. NPD recorded only two weeks of sales due to the game’s mid-August release date, so that’s not too bad of a figure at all.

This one came just a tad late because of some computer trouble (and that pesky The Wonderful 101 review!), but I think it actually turned out kind of awesome. Check it out if you’ve got the time. :]

Disney Infinity finally launched last month after being in development for a number of years. While we don’t have exact sales figures, Disney CFO Jay Rasulo said at the 2013 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference this week that the company is very pleased with the game’s sales thus far.

Disney Infinity released with “huge interest,” Rasulo stated. It may be early, but sales “have been on par” – or maybe even a bit better – than Skylanders.

“I don’t want to be definitive about something that is in its early days, but if you think about a really great product that has come out recently that had some similarities to Infinity, which is Skylanders, Skylanders Giants in particular … our sales have been on par with that even though we launched in August and they do theirs in September or October. We’re on that scale, maybe better.

“All indications are great, but these are very early days.”

Rasulo confirmed that Disney Infinity’s average player is 13 years-old. This is older than Disney anticipated, and there’s even a “certain percent” of users over 20. Most gamers have been picking up Disney Infinity on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Nintendo has prevailed in a case initiated by Creative Kingdoms, Nintendo has announced.

Creative Kingdoms originally filed its International Trade Commission complaint in 2011. The company declared that Nintendo infringed on its MagiQuest wands technology through the Wii remote controller.

However, the commission has ruled in favor of Nintendo, determining that the Wii – as well as the Wii U – do not violate any patents. The commission also found that Creative Kingdoms’ patents are invalid.

Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s deputy general counsel, said of the ruling:

“We are pleased with the commission’s determination. Nintendo’s track record demonstrates that we vigorously defend patent lawsuits when we believe we have not infringed another party’s patent. Nintendo continues to develop unique and innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others.”
