Rumors about the Wii U have been in full force these past few weeks, and we’re still months away from E3.

CVG is reporting today that Nintendo is considering changing the console’s name. The site states that “serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give the console a different name.”

There was quite a bit of uncertainty last year when Nintendo first revealed Wii U. Some were under the impression that Nintendo was simply creating a new controller for their current home system and weren’t planning on launching a new piece of hardware.

Likewise, there has been confusion about the 3DS. The company has been placing red box stickers on game boxes to show that the software is for a new handheld and isn’t compatible with the DS. A tagline has also been added to TV spots: “This is not DS. This is Nintendo 3DS.”

Perhaps Nintendo will be looking to avoid another round of confusion with Wii U. The name is obviously extremely similar to Wii, and the two consoles maintain similar appearances.

New rumors have started to surface regarding the Wii U’s capabilities.

Last night, we heard that the system was supposedly 20% less powerful than Microsoft’s next home console and today, a source speaking with Develop – originating from late 2011 – says that the Wii U will be twice as powerful as the Xbox 360. The site says it “could achieve roughly twice the processing and graphical potential of Microsoft’s current generation machine.”

Apparently some studios were expecting more power from the console.

Develop’s source said:

“I’ve heard [a project designer] complain it’s underpowered compared to what Nintendo announced, resulting in people having to de-scale their plans.

Along with this rumor, Develop has learned “that a prominent UK racing studio has committed to support Wii U with one project each year.”

IGN has published a new rumor regarding Microsoft’s next console.

While most of the article focuses on the system’s release date and some technical specifications, there was a terse statement included regarding a comparison to Nintendo’s upcoming console. The site claims that the next Xbox “will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo’s forthcoming console, the Wii U.”

I think most gaming enthusiasts had assumed that both Microsoft and Sony’s next consoles would end up being much more powerful than Wii U. However, it’ll be tough to make any true comparisons until the final specs of all of these systems have been provided.

An anonymous tipster speaking with The Sonic Stadium claims that Sumo Digital is developing a new Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing game for Wii U, 3DS, and Vita.

This is the second Sonic-related project rumored to be in the works for Wii U. TSSZ News reported last year that SEGA would be bringing Sonic Dimensions to the new console.

A Sumo employee supposedly said the following about the new Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing title:

“Now working on another title for Sega on 3DS, VITA and WiiU. [The] title we are working on is top secret but the last game we did for them was Sonic And Sega All-Star Racing, so the logical conclusion would be… ”

The Sonic Stadium states they have verified the legitamacy of the discussion and the Sumo Digital source.

One would think that this project would have to be Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing 2. The Sumo staffer apparently said that the company won’t be doing any further work on the first game, so a remixed version of the original specifically made for Wii U, 3DS, and Vita is unlikely.

Japanese publication Nikkei Trendy has reported on two new rumors today. One of them pertains to the 3DS.

The site reports that Nintendo is in the process of creating a “follow-up” of sorts to the 3DS. Specifically, it seems as though the Big N is working on a 3DS Lite. The new system would feature an enhanced battery and would be thinner than the current 3DS.

If Nintendo is going in this direction, it wouldn’t be at all surprising. Both the Game Boy Advance and the DS saw numerous iterations that improved on initial hardware.

For now, this report should be treated as a rumor. Having said that, Nikkei has known to be quite accurate in the past.

Forget The Box is claiming that a digital e-reader service will be released for Wii U. The site’s source supposedly comes from a software developer approached by Nintendo .

Basically, the application would allow users to download books, magazines, newspapers, comics, and other content. This would include every issue of Nintendo Power, instruction books, and maybe even players guides.

All of this digital content will be accessed through the Wii U’s controller. Each download would include a searchable index and users will be able to flip through the pages on the controller’s touch screen.

Consumers who are subscribed to a particular magazine will receive the latest issue automatically. This can be accomplished even if the console has been turned off.

Apparently, the e-reader service won’t be released only for Wii U. Nintendo has plans to bring it to 3DS as well as they look to share services between the two systems much like the iPhone and iPad.

It’d be best to exercise some caution with this rumor for now. That being said, I personally wouldn’t object to a service like this!

Update: I realize now that the folks handling ArtePiazza’s Twitter account may have been joking around. Just goes to show how I little I pay attention to April Fools’ Day!

Surely some of you remember Opoona. It was made for Wii a few years ago, and it was developed by ArtePiazza, the company behind the DS Dragon Quest ports.

If I’m remembering correctly, Opoona did not sell well in Japan. I wouldn’t be surprised if it it sold even worse in North America. But despite poor sales and a mixed critical reception, ArtePiazza is apparently working on a sequel.

Now, bear with me here since my understanding of Japanese is on the level of a 2-year-old child.

Someone on Twitter told ArtePiazza that they want Opoona 3DS as a Christmas present. Responding to this, the company seemed to say that this person should wait until April 1. This gives me the impression that some sort of reveal, which could be Opoona 3DS, is coming in a few months. We’ll see what happens!

It’s been a very, very long time since a mainline Final Fantasy game came to a Nintendo home console. But if GamesMaster UK is to be believed, the situation will change with Final Fantasy XV.

The magazine claims that Square Enix will hold a press conference at E3 2012. During the event, they’ll announce Final Fantasy XV for Wii U, as well as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

This is just speculation at this point. Magazine rumors tend to be hit or miss, so take this with a grain of salt.

The image basically speaks for itself. It comes from a Singaporean government site… and that’s pretty much it! There’s talk that the Wii U is on its fourth development kit at this time, though the image above makes me think that Nintendo has shipped out fifth edition units.
