Wii U eShop

Developer of the upcoming Cloudberry Kingdom on Wii U “Pwnee Studios” told Aussie Gamer the other day that Nintendo has been great to work with relating to the development and publishing of their game on the Wii U eShop, and they were “pumped” when they got the chance to bring the game to Nintendo fans.

Nintendo has been great to work with so far! We were raised playing the NES and SNES, so when we got the chance to develop our game for the Wii U, we were pumped! We really haven’t had many issues with Nintendo, and they have been very helpful whenever we have had a problem.

In terms of getting the game onto the eShop, it has gone pretty smoothly. We presented the game to Nintendo, they liked it, and they said we should go onto the eShop. All we had to do was agree!

One of the more interesting bits of information to come from this is how simple it was to get Nintendo to let them publish the game on the eShop! They simply show off their game (probably to some Nintendo representatives), and the Big N makes the decision themselves based on how cool the game is. I find that to be quite a refreshingly simple way to get a game put out!

Runner2 is an absolutely lovely game. We suggest that you grab it from the Wii U eShop when you have the chance. There is just one problem with Runner 2’s release: lock-up issues.

Numerous users have noted that Runner2 causes the Wii U to freeze and lock-up when exiting the game. This doesn’t appear to be isolated, unfortunately.

Thanks to Jake for the tip.

Two Tribes hasn’t confirmed a price point for Toki Tori 2. Heck, we still don’t have a specific release date. But when Toki Tori 2 launches next month, most would probably agree that it’ll be worth your money no matter the cost.

On Twitter, Two Tribes said that its upcoming Wii U eShop game will probably take around ten hours to complete. That’s pretty lengthy for a downloadable release!

While most had guessed by this point that the upcoming reveal of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag would be pirate-related, this new discovery (from the same tipster that brought Kotaku the original promotional poster image) cements it. As you can see, the image is a map of Cuba and the surrounding islands as well as a full-view version in the bottom left corner that says “The Coastlands of Florida”.

Whether this is the only location in the game is anyone’s guess, but it will most certainly end up being one of them.

Japan’s Wii U eShop is rather barren at present. A few retail games are up for download as well as the free-to-play Tank! Tank! Tank! version, but it’s lacking original indie content.

Arc System Works will be improving the situation by publishing Nano Assault Neo in Japan. This will be the Japanese store’s first indie Wii U eShop game.

Interestingly, without a Japanese publisher, developers can’t release their games on the 3DS or Wii U eShop.

The Wii U eShop is gaining yet another indie title. Another Castle, a 2D platformer with randomly generated levels, is coming to Nintendo’s console.

David Byers is Another Castle’s sole developer. His past work includes Kid Vector, Love Me Not, Blast Soccer, and Haunted Hallway for iOS and Android.

Speaking about the game’s development and how Another Castle wound up on Wii U, Byers explained:

Uncade right now is basically just me. I’m based in Richmond, Virginia. Part of the reason I named my company Uncade, as in “unlike an arcade”, is that we are in a period of great disruption in the game industry right now. Everything from motion controls, digital distribution, smart phones, fantastic middleware, and the rise of indie development are shaking up what’s possible, even for just a solo developer such as myself.

I’m really excited to be working on the Wii U, and am especially looking forward to coming up with some funky uses for the tablet controller.

With the development for Another Castle I decided to switch things up. Instead of making a small mobile focused title, I decided to work on a larger game where I would release as early as I can for free, and iteratively improve the game, eventually getting to a saleable alpha and then full release.

Emily Rogers ended up playing the prototype and got in touch, asking if I would like to get the game on the eShop. I of course said yes, because I think Another Castle on the eShop should be a slam dunk, it’s something I think Nintendo fans in particular will really enjoy. I spent some time improving the prototype, and Emily then got me in touch with Dan [Adelman] at Nintendo, and I was just approved as a Wii U developer yesterday. The eShop seems pretty indie friendly from what I’ve seen so far, the most important thing for me being the ability to add post release content updates.

Byers has launched a Kickstarter for Another Castle here. He’s looking to raise $12,000 by March 29.
