Rumors

Consider this update part news and part rumor.

An unconfirmed report from a South Korean newspaper suggests that online gaming giant Nexon has reached out to EA about a potential takeover bid.

Once the rumor circulated, EA shares rose nearly six percent. They rose $1.22, or 8.1%, to $16.23. According to Forbes, “stock lately has been trading close to a 52-week low”.

Is this the boxart for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2? Perhaps. Twitter user “MW3Updates” shared the image above last night.

There are points that seem to imply that the boxart is real. As Kotaku notes, it uses higher-resolution art from the official series site (and GameStop page), and the text matches the font of the new Call of Duty. Then again, there are signs – such as the use of lens flare – that the box could be fake.

As far as what’s written in Italian on the box: “Prenota Subito” means “Reserve Now” and the box says “Only for Display” in the corner.

Rayman Origins failed to light the sales charts on fire, but it did manage to turn a profit for Ubisoft. Perhaps this is why the company seems to be giving the game a second shot at success.

Kotaku has acquired images from an marketing survey that implies Rayman Origins 2 is on the way. It mentions “brand new settings: legendary worlds filled with castles, vampires, Ghosts, Greek Gods, or dragons”. The sequel would contain another “long and intense campaign”, along with the ability to play alone or with up to three friends in co-op.

The survey comes from Arkenford, a company that is a regular client for Ubisoft. Although a sequel appears likely at this point, we can’t be sure this is the real deal until we receive an official confirmation from Ubisoft,

IGN appears to have obtained a promotional box for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. A retailer employee sent in the photo above to the site, which will be placed in stores soon.

The box looks exactly the same as the rumored poster image found earlier this week. I suppose we’ll be getting something for Black Ops 2 on May 2 after all…

A retail source has sent in the above image to Kotaku. It’s a poster photo of Activision and Treyarch’s long-rumored Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Activision did not comment on the poster in question. If it’s reliable, however, we may hear something about the game early next month.

Korean website Betanews had a chance to interview Shigeru Miyamoto at the Louvre Museum last week.

Supposedly Miyamoto confirmed the existence of Super Mario 4, saying:

“We have Mario team in company, so we are making Super Mario 4. But only I can say is, we just announced that game. More details will be revealed later.”

It wasn’t specified if this is the 3DS Mario game or the upcoming Wii U title.

Obviously the above quote is a very rough translation. Super Mario 4 was mentioned by Miyamoto, though… assuming we can trust the source. I’d be more confident if a) we received a more accurate translation and b) if the source and Miyamoto’s words could be verified. Until then, remain cautious.

WWE All Stars made it out for the 3DS last year. At this time, it’s unclear if there will be more wrestling action on the system in 2012.

When THQ’s WWE Global Community Manager Aaron Kaufman was asked about a new title for the 3DS, suggesting a possible WrestleFest game with DLC he said, “cool idea, unfortunately no”.

To me this sort of sounds like a no to the WrestleFest idea rather than ruling out a project for the 3DS entirely. There are others, though, who think otherwise. Maybe THQ will clarify the situation soon…

Update from Valay: Already confirmed fake (thanks Damian). Apologies to anyone out there who thought this could turn out to be true. These things are just too easy to photoshop and whatnot. I’ll be sure to smack Austin later (or something like that) so that you won’t see similar types of speculation on here in the future.

Oh please lord Jabu Jabu do not let this be true. According to Nintendo of Japan’s website, there is something in existence that is called the “Wii Entertainment System”, and that something is scheduled to have information released about it on the 26th of April, 2012. Now, my gut isn’t sure whether this is a misunderstanding or if it could be a hint, but if it is, it would fall in line with earlier rumors that Nintendo was looking to rename the Wii U to avoid confusion from consumers.

That being said, this is the complete wrong way to go with it. This is going to cause more confusion if anything, because it sounds like it could easily be a synonym for ‘The Wii’. Oh Nintendo, how do you expect to sell consoles if people think it’s simply a slightly newer version of a device released in 2006!?

Variety reports that EA and John Gatins are looking into a film for the Need for Speed IP. According to the site, George and John Gatins will assist in adapting the franchise into a movie. Warner Bros. and Sony have expressed interest in the project, but Paramount apparently is the frontrunner to pick up the film.
