Sonic x Shadow Generations review

System: Switch
Release date: October 25, 2024
Developer: Sonic Team
Publisher: SEGA

The original release of 2011’s Sonic Generations felt as much like recompense as it did celebration. The unsteady gait that Sonic had developed since his switch to 3D was slowing him to an unwieldy crawl, and developer Sonic Team felt it was time to earnestly look back at their legacy to plot a path forward. The result was about the best a 2011 Sonic fan could have hoped for – lashings of nostalgia without being overly condescending to the long-term fan, and with just enough tongue-in-cheek, self-referential humor to disarm the stern melodrama that had worked its way into Sonic’s latter outings. Sonic Generations was intended to serve as a launch pad for the next 20 years of Sonic, however, its mechanical jitteriness and saggy latter half dampened its appeal to fans old and new. Sega and Sonic Team are now back for another crack at it, with Sonic x Shadow Generations seeking to tighten up the overall experience and inject a jet-black dose of edge into one of Sonic’s more memorable recent outings.

SEGA shared plenty of news about Shadow x Sonic Generations this week, but the big announcement was that Shadow from the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will be featured in the game. A level will be included that’s inspired by the film and Keanu Reeves is even on board to voice the character for the DLC.

Series producer Shun Nakamura spoke about how this all came about in an interview with the PlayStation Blog. He started off by sharing the following:

Sonic Generations Doom Powers

SEGA just issued a new Sonic x Shadow Generations trailer which highlights the game’s Doom Powers.

Doom Powers “offer dynamic, action-packed ways of navigating iconic stages and defeating challenging bosses.” Players will be able to use Doom Spear, Doom Blast, Doom Morph, Doom Wing, and Doom Surf throughout the campaign.

Sonic x Shadow Generations Collector's Edition

A special Sonic x Shadow Generations Collector’s Edition will be released in the west. What’s especially interesting is that SEGA has teamed up with Limited Run Games for the release.

A bunch of goodies are included here alongside the game. You’ll get the Art of Sonic x Shadow Generations art book, official soundtrack, Sonic & Shadow Dreamcast statue, commemorative Dreamcast jewel case, steelbook, Chao figurines, Sonic, Shadow and Classic Sonic shoes keychain, and an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

To recap, here’s an overview of Sonic x Shadow Generations:

Shadow x Sonic Generations Chao Garden

Following fan speculation that Sonic x Shadow Generations could be bringing back the Chao Garden, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that it won’t be in the game.

Chao Gardens are largely known from their appearance in the Sonic Adventure series. Players can essentially raise Chao as digital pets. Fans have been clamoring for the gameplay feature to return, but we haven’t seen much of it in recent years.
