Super Meat Boy was confirmed for a May 12 release on the European Wii U eShop a few days ago. An announcement sent out today reveals that the game will also be out in North America on the same day.

Super Meat Boy will cost $14 / £13 / €14 at launch, which is a 20 percent discount. It’s seeing a 20 percent discount until May 26.

Along with Super Meat Boy’s Wii U release date news, the announcement contained an interesting section which seems to tease a 3DS version. Here’s that relevant part of the press release:

Super Meat Boy launched in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PC, and was immediately labeled as a definitive work in the sub-genre of brutally difficult platformers. Since then, gamers all over the world have been waiting to play it on other platforms. It was finally released on PS4 and Vita last year and with the Wii U version arriving this month, only the 3DS will be missing (but maybe not for too long ;)) Gotta catch them all!

Super Meat Boy is finally launching on Wii U next month. A listing on the eShop confirms it for May 12, and there’s a good chance we’ll see it in North America on the same day. It’ll cost €14.00.

Several years ago, Super Meat Boy was planned for Wii via the WiiWare service. That didn’t pan out unfortunately, and Nintendo fans have not had access to the game since its launch in 2010. Five years later though, that might be changing.

There’s a very interesting message included at the end of an official Super Meat Boy blog post from designer Tommy Refenes. It reads: “To the fan’s we’re still excluding I’ll leave you with this: Wii haven’t forgotten about U.”

Hmm… that definitely sounds like a strong hint at a Wii U eShop release for Super Meat Boy! It’d be pretty great if a Nintendo version happens after all these days.

What happens when your company doesn’t have a name yet, but you’re trying to release a game on a proper video game platform? If the platform-holder is Nintendo, apparently they just make up a name for you! The following comes from Team Meat’s (Super Meat Boy dev) Edmund McMillen:

We didn’t name ourselves. We were just given the name by Nintendo in a random press release and we were just like, ‘Yeah, okay’. Somebody asked what the names were that we thought of before and we realised that we never talked about it! We never discussed anything, we just became Team Meat. I think it’s fine — it works. I mean, it’s kind of an honour, right?

Sort of a funny tale in retrospect, since most people know that as their official title and likely assumed that it was chosen by the developers themselves. Nintendo creates another gaming icon… sort of. You can read more from the guys over at Team Meat (who are really cool) in an interview with the print/pdf version of GamesTM magazine.
