Part 2!

I’ve tried starting this article a bunch of times now and I can’t quite strike the right tone so I’m just going to reveal the punch line right away instead of doing some drawn out build up because I’m supposed to: Game reviews are stupid, and gaming-related articles are stupid. The whole façade that we (us gaming writers) know what we’re talking about is stupid, and it’s just that; a façade. Every single person who sits in front of a keyboard to write about video games has a job to do, and that’s to make their readers think they are smarter than them. I’m here to let you know that they’re not smarter than you. I’m not smarter than you. Hell, I’m probably way dumber than you, and that is okay. I just want to make you feel like your opinion is worth more than any game journalist’s.

There haven’t been a whole lot of updates about Ikachan for DSiWare, but Nicalis is still working on the project. Nicalis head Tyrone Rodriguez shares some details in the video above and even shows a tiny bit of blurry footage!

Rodriguez also opened up about the possibility of making an original title, says that they’re wrapping up NightSky for the 3DS, comments on a “small surprise” for the 3DS this summer, and teases a game that will be on the Wii U and 3DS – which could be their first multiplayer title.

Some folks are speculating that the video above will be used as the opening in Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Continuing my series of “article titles that make people click on them”, I’ve got a point to make today that I think is really important. You see, like the best of us, I always get into arguments about video games with friends or with Internet demons. Usually it’s Nintendo-related, and at the end of the day the bottom line always remains the same; “I think what I think and you think what you think and who cares.” We can argue day and night about why Skyward Sword isn’t the worst game in the series, or why Mario doesn’t need a story to be important, but the overall conclusion to the argument never ever changes. It’s always a “live and let live” sort of ideology.

Which is great, right? The fact that we have such respect for each other’s beliefs and we are understanding enough human beings to realize the triviality of arguing about video games is wonderful! Except that we don’t. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one person who- when faced with the opportunity of gaming related debate- simply stated outright that opinions on these things aren’t important, and everyone should just enjoy what they enjoy.

Rumor has it that Nintendo Software Technology is now in full production of a new title.

NST is also looking for a senior software engineer for WebKit development. A job posting was added to LinkedIn a few days ago.

The studio has created all of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, Wave Race: Blue Storm, 1080° Avalanche, and Metroid Prime: Hunters. They also worked on the cancelled Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and Wii Crush.

IGN continued to post snippets from their Eiji Aonuma interview today. Earlier this week, the site posted a response from the Zelda producer about partnerships, while the latest article focuses on complexity, training, and story.

First up, here’s what Aonuma had to say about adding more complexity to the series:

“I’m not really opposed to adding more complexity to Zelda. However, I don’t think Zelda needs complicated elements that have to be mastered before a player can enjoy the core of the game’s appeal. I think Zelda should be a game that is simple but that also has enough depth and variety to enable players to continue to make new discoveries.”

Next, Aonuma discussed the tutorial process in Skyward Sword:

“The tutorial process in [Skyward Sword] wasn’t designed with the specific goal of educating new players. The process was designed to let the player become familiar with the world of Skyloft and to communicate with its residents. After the tutorial process, Zelda disappears and Link has to descend by himself to the unexplored surface world. The intent of the tutorial is to give players a strong connection to Skyloft, which is Link’s home, and to Zelda.”

Finally, Aonuma took a moment to comment about the story elements in Zelda:

“We’re always trying to incorporate story elements into Zelda games in a balanced manner. If you’re saying that the story stood out more than anything else, then I feel like we need to work harder to achieve the right balance in the next Zelda game.”

Hmm… I’m not sure if I like the sound of that last comment. I thought that the story was handled beautifully in Skyward Sword, personally…
