Free Radical Design – before it became Crytek UK – was working on the much-anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront III. The project was eventually canned, though the exact reasons behind this are slightly murky.

You may be interested to hear that Star Wars: Battlefront III was once in the works for Wii alongside other HD versions. A former Free Radical QA staffer, who discussed the game during a recent Reddit AMA, spoke highly of Battlefront III’s use of the Wiimote:

“It’s a small thing, but the controls on the Wii were fantastic. Blasting someone with your Wiimote was up there in the list of cool.”

And when asked about how Star Wars Battlefront III’s Wii visuals stacked up to the other versions, the former employee said:

“It obviously wasn’t HD and the graphics weren’t there compared to the rest but it was the gameplay on the Wii that really made it.”

It’s a shame that we’ll never get to experience a fully-made Free Radical Star Wars: Battlefront III game. I would have liked to give those Wiimote controls a go!

Zelda: Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword possess very different art styles. Whereas Twilight Princess is rather dark and brown to fit the atmosphere, you could say that Skyward Sword is much more colorful.

One passionate fan has come up with an intriguing mix of the two games. GBAtemp member “disbala” is working on a Twilight Princess texture pack (requires Dolphin) that incorporates the style of Skyward Sword.

While not complete, you can already see how noticeably different Twilight Princess looks with Skyward Sword’s style. You can find a few example shots above.

Thanks to Yono for the tip.

You know what would be neat? If Wii games were available through the Wii U eShop. Like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, maybe.

But there isn’t a way to grab digital Wii games in any form – meaning that a digital re-release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is out of the question.

Even if it were possible, the previous agreement would need to be amended or a new one would need to be created, according to Capcom’s Christian Svensson who commented on the situation a couple of months ago:

“There’s no plans I’m aware of and as you point it, it would mean Capcom Japan amending the prior agreement or creating a new one as well as potentially new development, unless Nintendo at some point has plans to release Wii ISOs digitally (which I’m not aware of happening).”

A quick glance at Amazon shows that Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is available at retail for around $25. If you haven’t already purchased the game, that’s not a bad price!

“With regard to the Nintendo sensor, at that time we were trying to start this company that would use pulse sensors, but not just to measure pulse rate – that doesn’t tell you too much. You have to be more sophisticated than that if you want to measure things thing arousal, valance or a range of emotions using heart-rate variability. I don’t think Nintendo really knew what to do with that.”

– Neuro-technology Professor Roger Quy

I’m not entirely sure I’d agree with Quy on this one. I think he’s right that only measuring heart-rate isn’t terribly useful, but I’d imagine that many people would have also said that only measuring weight distribution wouldn’t be very useful for a fitness game, and look at well Wii Fit did! I think the real issue is that Nintendo was deciding exactly where to go with Wii and DS, the Wii U was conceptualizing at that time, and bigger fish needed to be fried. They probably just decided it wasn’t worth the effort to put out another peripheral.

“There are similarities [to Skylanders], in that we have figures, but the similarities stop there. Infinity is intended to be a platform for all things Disney. The playsets inside of Infinity are new and original stories. They are open-world games.”

“And then of course the Toy Box mode is more Minecraft-meets-LittleBigPlanet. It’s something totally different where we allow kids to use their imagination and take our brands to build whatever they want.”

– Disney Interative executive producer John Vignocchi

This is the first I’m hearing about a “Minecraft-meets-LittleBigPlanet” mode, which actually sounds like it could be extremely neat, especially for younger kids. Regarding the similarities to Skylanders, I believe Vignocchi. It doesn’t seem like the two will be especially comparable in terms of gameplay, though I suppose that doesn’t overturn the fact that Disney only made this game because of Skylanders‘ success. It’s definitely a viable business decision!
