Super Smash Bros. for Wii U recently celebrated its 11th anniversary on November 21, 2025. Along with the game itself released the first-ever wave of amiibo figures, which included twelve new characters priced at $12.99 each. If you look at lists or rankings of the best Super Smash Bros. games, Wii U is almost always near or at the bottom – in other words, it’s often regarded as the “worst” entry in the series. Which isn’t saying much, because each Smash Bros. game is great in its own way, which is a testament to how well they’re made. So today, we’re focusing on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and celebrating its anniversary by discussing what it did right and what it did wrong, eleven years later.

Kensuke Tanabe, the producer of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, has commented on Nintendo’s approach to the game’s difficulty.

In an interview with Nintendo Dream, the Japanese magazine pointed out how this entry feels like more thought was put into the “ease of play”. Tanabe was asked if there was anything that was kept in mind with regard to the overall difficulty, to which he pointed out how the team wanted to appeal to both longtime fan and potential newcomers. That, along with achieving certain goals during development, meant toning down the backtracking a bit in terms of complexity.

We’ve translated Tanabe’s full words are as follows:

It’s been revealed that longtime Nintendo designer Hideki Konno has left the company after about forty years.

Konno joined Nintendo way back in 1986. His first game was Super Mario Bros. 2, but he’s had quite the resume since. For a long time, he was the producer for most Mario Kart titles (director on Super Mario Kart) – though Kosuke Yabuki took over that job starting with Mario Kart 8. He was also the director of Luigi’s Mansion on GameCube. As the general producer of mobile development, Konno worked on Miitomo, Dr. Mario World, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Mario Kart Tour.
