Fae Farm review

System: Switch
Release date: September 8, 2023
Developer: Phoenix Labs
Publisher: Phoenix Labs

The farming/life sim genre has exploded in recent years, and with an abundance of high quality titles now available on Switch, it is becoming increasingly difficult for new entrants to stand out from the crowd. Fae Farm, which comes from Phoenix Labs, is the latest to have gathered some attention prior to its launch thanks to its magic-focused premise, RPG elements, and quality-of-life features that make the pains of the genre more bearable and accessible. While Fae Farm takes several steps in the right direction towards this end, there are some design choices that make the overall experience less magical than it could have been.

Fae Farm post launch

Phoenix Labs has provided information about post-launch support for Fae Farm, its upcoming farm sim.

Following release, the developer intends to offer new places to discover, new characters to befriend and romance, new creatures, new stories, and more. Switch players will gain access to two future Fae Farm content packs downloadable for free. They should launch between December 2023 and the end of June 2024.

Fae Farm preview

It’s becoming more difficult for games in the increasingly crowded farming/life-sim genre to stand out from the pack. Fae Farm – the next release from Phoenix Labs, who previously released Dauntless – is trying to carve its own niche by embracing a magical setting and promising exciting features like drop-in-drop-out online multiplayer and combat-focused dungeons. The game has had some prominent marketing, but it would be unfair not to mention that several thematically-similar indies have also been announced recently, including Garden Witch Life, WItchbrook, and Fields of Mistria. After getting hands on with Fae Farm, though, I was surprised at just how massive this game’s scope appears to be – it seems poised to be one of the densest, most mechanically rich attempts at this type of game that we’ve seen in a while.

Phoenix Labs has set a release date for Fae Farm, its upcoming farming and life sim title. It will be available for Switch on September 8, 2023.

Fae Farm was previously announced during a Nintendo Direct last September. It last had a general Q2 2023 release window.

Below is an official overview with more details:

Fae Farm preview

Phoenix Labs recently hosted a preview event for their upcoming Switch-exclusive Fae Farm. As only the second game from the developer, it takes a drastically different approach than the team’s first hack-and-slash monster slayer Dauntless. Coming from frantic combat and vicious creatures, Phoenix Labs instead chose a more relaxing and winding experience. Aiming for “cozy,” the mark has been hit fairly well, as upon joining the event I saw the players simply wandering their farm and watching butterflies meander along the fields.

Fae Farm

Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs today unveiled Fae Farm, “a new cozy-casual farming and life simulation that invites players to escape with friends into an enchanted world filled with wonder.” A release is planned for Q2 2023 exclusively on Switch.

Fae Farm lets players control an adventurer invited to join a friendly community and create a home while restoring harmony to the land of Azoria. They can build out their homesteads, explore varied environments, gather resources, and plumb the depths of the world to uncover the magic they’ll need to rebuild Azoria. Single-player is fully supported, though the game also allows for seamless drop-in, drop-out play through online and local wireless multiplayer.
