Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade

Square Enix has sent out a launch trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. The RPG just made it to the console today.

For a rundown of what to expect, read the following overview:

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade review

System: Switch 2
Release date: January 22, 2026
Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix

There is a particular kind of disbelief that sets in the first time Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade loads on a Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode. Not because the game merely runs at this point, that expectation feels sort of outdated – but because it runs with such a fluidity that it quickly stops calling attention to itself. You might simply melt into the experience, and I think that’s exactly what they set out to do.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake frame rate resolution

The next big third-party port is almost here on Nintendo Switch 2 with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, and now Digital Foundry has offered technical insight with various details including frame rate and resolution.

Overall it looks like Square Enix delivered a very solid port here. The game seems to be an improvement over the PS4 version and in some regards it’s comparable to the PS5 release.

Here’s the roundup of tidbits:

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade just got a demo on Nintendo Switch 2 yesterday, and now that we have extended footage, graphics comparisons have started to emerge – including one that shows it running up against the PS4 and Steam Deck.

Overall, it looks like Square Enix is coming out with one of the better Nintendo Switch 2 ports thus far. The game runs at 1080p and at 30 frames per second. While that resolution is lower than the PS4, it has the graphical improvements that PS5 received. Nintendo Switch 2 has advantages over PS4 Pro with lighting courtesy of more light points, more shadows, volumetric fog, and more.

September 25: According to Square Enix, the company is planning a demo for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade.

That news comes directly from director Naoki Hamaguchi. In a recent interview, he confirmed that a demo is planned for release by the end of the year. Hamaguchi didn’t explain what exactly will be included, but said that for “players who might still be on the fence or unsure about playing, it’d be great for them to experience [the demo] and feel the full specs” of the system.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Buster Sword

The Buster Sword is one of the most iconic weapons in video game history, but in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Square Enix was considering a different direction.

Co-director Naoki Hamaguchi shared the news in a recent interview. It was explained that with Cloud swinging the sword around with one hand, it “sort of felt like it would weaken the sense of realism”. However, Square Enix ultimately believed that fans “wouldn’t accept”

Hamaguchi’s full words:

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, has spoken about what it’s been like working with Nintendo Switch 2 and the challenges of developing games for the system while accounting for handheld mode.

Just like Nintendo’s previous system, teams have a bit more power to work with when the system is docked. In portable mode, things need to be scaled back a bit – and there’s also the factory of battery life to account for. Hamaguchi said Square Enix (and other developers) need to think about “how you can get a version in handheld mode that doesn’t look inferior and stands up to the home console versions on other platforms.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade director Naoki Hamaguchi has spoken more about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version of the RPG, and has shared a few words of confidence.

Screen Rant was recently speaking with Hamaguchi about the game. During the discussion, he relayed his thoughts that the upcoming release “will kind of turn out to be one of the model HD games for Switch 2 ports.”

Hamaguchi said in the interview:

Naoki Hamaguchi, co-director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and longtime member of Square Enix’s creative team, has been shaping the future of one of gaming’s most beloved stories. With Remake now arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 to kick off 2026, in an interview with Nintendo Everything, he recently reflected on the challenges and triumphs of bringing Cloud’s journey to a new audience, and what it means to see the series find a home on Nintendo hardware for the first time in over two decades.
