Mii

Miitomo is quickly approaching its termination date. Once May 9 rolls right in, that’ll be it for Nintendo’s first mobile app.

In a notice posted to Miitomo tonight, Nintendo shares an interesting update about Miis. Later this month, a feature will be added so that users can create and edit Mii characters in a web browser for their Nintendo Account. Maintenance will be carried out until then, and while it’s taking place, you won’t be able to change your Mii character – including clothes and accessories.

Here’s the complete notice from Nintendo:

In 2011, patent-assertion company RecogniCorp LLC filed a case again Nintendo, claiming that Mii characters infringed a U.S. patent relating to ways of storing police sketch-artist data. However, Judge Richard A. Jones found that this was invalid.

Nintendo said today:

“Judge Jones held that the patent was an improper attempt to monopolize mathematical operations, which cannot be patented. The Judge therefore did not need to rule directly on Nintendo’s non-infringement arguments.”

Ajay Singh, Nintendo of America’s Director of Litigation and Compliance, noted the following of the verdict:

“We are very pleased with Judge Jones’ decision, which finally put an end to RecogniCorp’s attempt to cover inventions to which it has no rights. Nintendo will continue to protect its products and innovations against accusations of patent infringement.”

Nintendo is developing a Mii-focused smart device app that will be released in 2015, president Satoru Iwata revealed during the company’s financial results briefing earlier this week.

Nintendo originally hoped to have the app sometime this year. However, the amount of ideas grew as development progressed, and a decision was made to bring them all to fruition while also adding polish to avoid launching a half-baked product. Iwata said that Nintendo wants to get things right since this is their first time and they want to reach as many consumers as possible. Rather than “doing business” on smart devices, Nintendo instead wants to strengthen the connection between the company and consumers.

Iwata’s comments came about while speaking about Nintendo’s Japanese homepage and how there currently isn’t a mobile version. This is something that will be addressed before the end of the year.

Hideki Kamiya reflected on the The Wonderful 101’s development on Twitter earlier today. According to the director, PlatinumGames had attempted to make it so players could bring their own Mii into the game as a hero. This is something he hopes can be done in “The Wonderful 102”, he said.

Kamiya’s tweet in full:

When asked if players would have had the opportunity to choose which Unite Morph their Mii would have used – based on the original idea – Kamiya said:

Of course, The Wonderful 102 is not a sure-fire thing at this point. The Wonderful 101 hasn’t done particularly well at retail, though Kamiya has previously expressed interest in making a sequel.
