Pokemon GO

Niantic has announced a new event for Pokemon GO to celebrate the holidays.

First, between December 25 and January 3, players will have a greater chance of finding Eggs that hatch Togepi, Pichu, and other recently found Pokemon from the Johto region. Special Pikachu wearing festive hats will also be staying around longer, as they’ll be more easily encountered during the holiday event.

If that wasn’t enough, beginning on December 30 through January 8, players will be more likely to encounter the first Pokemon and their Evolutions. This specifically applies to Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur, as well as Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard, plus Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise. Lure Modules will also last for 60 minutes instead of 30 minutes.

Yesterday, Niantic released the Apple Watch version of Pokemon GO. For a look at it in action, take a look at the video below.

Pokemon GO is out now for Apple Watch. Folks who are interested in this new version of the game can find it in the App Store.

When playing on Apple Watch, you’ll receive a notification when a Pokemon is nearby. You can also earn steps for buddy Pokemon and incubating eggs. Apple Watch also lets you collect items and obtain information about a PokeStop or hatched egg. However, catching Pokemon needs to be done on a mobile device.

Here’s the full announcement and explanation of features from Nianatic:

Update (12/20): This update should now be live.

Original (12/19): A new Pokemon GO update is going live across iOS and Android. Users should find that version 1.21.0 / 0.51.1 can be downloaded shortly.

The update is pretty minor in nature, though it does address a bothersome bug. Niantic’s official patch notes are as follows:

– The bug that caused incorrect vibration notifications has been fixed.
– Day and night modes have changed to more accurately reflect the Trainer’s current time of day.
– Minor text fixes.

Niantic announced back in September that Pokemon GO players had walked more than 4.6 billion kilometers since its mobile game launched. The company has now shared a new wave of stats.

As of December 7, Pokemon GO players have walked over 8.7 billion kilometers collectively. To put it in perspective, that’s more than 200,000 trips around Earth. Over 88 billion Pokemon were also caught during that period. Niantic says it amounts to about 533 million Pokemon a day.

Niantic is in the process of rolling out a new Pokemon GO update. Like usual, fans are picking it apart in hopes of making some interesting discoveries. The Silph Road now appears to have found evidence of a potential holiday event / items.

First, graphic assets have been added which look a lot like presents or gifts. File names for these are tiered from Bronze to Gold and then with variants for Special, Great, and Ultra. The Silph Road also points out that a metadata attribute named “HasHolidayItems” is showing in relation to the shop, and a variant of the shop button has appeared:

We’ll have to see if anything comes of this. If we do hear anything, we’ll let you know,

Niantic is quickly putting speculation to rest of Pokemon GO’s cancellation for Apple Watch. On Twitter, the company confirmed that nothing has changed, and remains in development. Furthermore, it’s “coming soon.”

Niantic’s brief (but effective) Twitter update is as follows:

9to5Mac is reporting that Niantic is scrapping plans to bring Pokemon GO to Apple Watch. When it was originally shown in September, the app was apparently an “unfinished port.”

Niantic is thus far not officially commenting on whether Pokemon GO has been cancelled for Apple Watch. However, one user claims to have heard from the company in a customer support email response that plans have ceased, though “if demand for an Apple Watch port increases, we will continue development of a port.”

Niantic added the first few Pokemon from the series’ second generation this week. One of these was Togepi. Reports are now beginning to surface that the Pokemon’s evolution, Togetic, can be obtained as well.

Twitter user Kellyffsweden has shown various photos of having obtained Togetic. He writes that he hatched three Togepi eggs, and then managed to gather 50 candy to evolve Togepi.

Pokemon GO

Switch and the NES Classic Edition were among the most-searched consumer-electronics tech products of 2016. But how about in general?

Believe it or not, Pokemon GO was the most-searched term this year. In the United Kingdom, it held on to the second spot. Pokemon GO was number four over in the United States. Combining all of the data in various countries reveals that the mobile hit was number one overall.
