BAKERU review

System: Switch
Release date: September 3, 2024
Developer: Good-Feel
Publisher: Spike Chunsoft

BAKERU is an interesting mix of past and present for Good-Feel. As the co-producer of the long-running Ganbare Goemon series, Etsunobu Ebisu has clearly brought his expertise from that here by creating what feels like a spiritual successor in tone and presentation, and with an impressive resume of titles of a similar genre on Switch (including Princess Peach: Showtime! and Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn) this game represents the best of both worlds. Thankfully, it delivers on both fronts to be one of the best 3D action games I’ve played on the system this year.

Bakeru

August 12: Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan!! is getting a release in the west as simply Bakeru, a listing on the eShop reveals. It will launch on September 3, 2024.

For those who haven’t heard of the game previously, Bakeru is made by Good-Feel – the studio that recently made Princess Peach: Showtime but also handled Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Wario Land: Shake It, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Yoshi’s Crafted World. Spike Chunsoft will be responsible for the overseas launch, which features a couple of new attacks and an additional enemy.

Spike Chunsoft held a presentation during this year’s Anime Expo where they announced that Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid will be receiving a worldwide release. The game is set to launch digitally on Switch on August 6, 2024 for $39.99.

A free downloadable demo of the game will also be made available starting July 30, 2024, a week before the full game releases. It will feature save data transfers, so that players purchasing the full game will be able to pick up right where they left off in the demo.

Shiren the Wanderer Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island review

System: Switch
Release date: February 27, 2024
Developer: Spike Chunsoft

After dreaming of a strange mountain island, Shiren and his ferret friend Koppa embark on yet another journey. Following an unfortunate battle with the biggest baddy on the island, he awakens at the base of the mountain with no memory of his journey to the top. Spurred onward by Koppa’s recap of the events, Shiren and his companion decide to ascend once more and unravel the mysteries of Serpentcoil Island once and for all.  Now with Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, does this adventure change up the long-lived series, or is it just another tried and true entry in the series we love?
