If you want to experience Super Mario 3D Land, you’ll have to apply new firmware to your system. 3DS owners will be happy to hear that the update is very useful, unlike some of the ones Nintendo included with Wii discs.

Once you’ve finished the upgrade, new functionality will be added to your friends list. A button will be added to the bottom screen so that you can join a friend’s game in progress. Additionally, friends who are online will automatically be moved to the front of the line and you can cycle through a long list of entries quickly while holding the left/right Circle Pad or Control Pad.

Another firmware upgrade will be available later this month, which adds video recording features to the camera application and makes enhancements to the 3DS eShop.

Halloween is over, but there’s still plenty of time to bring inanimate objects to life. A creative new portable game from Nintendo lets players colorize their worlds in their own personal palettes and bring to life bizarre and bubbly creatures of every conceivable crazy incarnation. Freakyforms™: Your Creations, Alive!, a downloadable game for the Nintendo 3DS™ system, gives you that chance and even lets you swap your creatures with other creators.

Using the stylus on the touch screen, players build their own custom creatures, called “formees.” No drawing skills are needed, so players of all ages can give it a try. Young players can make their creatures from simple geometric shapes, while players with more artistic abilities can challenge themselves to create more intricate and detailed creatures. Then they can customize the color and the look, and add eyes and a mouth. Players can even add wings to make their creatures fly or giant bouncy legs to make them hop along. The creative combinations are endless.

This art definitely isn’t as spoilerish as the batch we posted last night. Just to be safe, though, I’ve posted the images after the break.

This week’s Nintendo Download includes the following featured content:

Yesterday we learned that Amanita Design cancelled the WiiWare version of Machinarium. The game simply couldn’t be squeezed into the 40MB file size cap set by Nintendo.

Developer head Jakub Dvorský has elaborated on the situation behind the port. It was actually nearing completion before the team decided to scrap the project entirely. Again, this was mostly due to file size constraints.

Dvorský said:

“The port is practically finished, but after some discussions, we decided not to release it because it’s just not good. The resolution is crap, and we had to squeeze the whole game (which is around 360 MB in [the] original version) into [the] 40 MB WiiWare limit. The music sounds terrible, the background pictures are heavily compressed, and we had to throw out … some animations.”
