Ron Gilbert has announced his departure from Double Fine. Gilbert worked on one game since joining the studio in 2010, The Cave, which saw release in January.

Gilbert’s long-term plans are unclear. However, he did confirm that his immediate efforts will be focused on the iOS title “Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG”.

A message from Gilbert reads:

Now that The Cave is done and unleashed on an unsuspecting world (ok, we did do a bunch of PR, so it wasn’t exactly unsuspecting), it’s time for me to move on from Double Fine and plot my next move.

Nintendo is coming out with a major expansion for New Super Mario Bros. U. Sometime within the next few months, owners of the Wii U game will be able to experience loads of brand new levels in “New Super Luigi U”.

New Super Luigi U will be more like a level pack rather than a completely new adventure. The DLC won’t feature an original story for Luigi, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, “but all of the levels have been redesigned”.

Regarding Mario, Miyamoto wasn’t able to confirm (or deny) if the other mustached hero will be making appearance.

Miyamoto told MTV Multiplayer:

“There are some people that say that they want Mario to appear, but Mr. Tezuka is saying that he’s not going to let Mario into this game.”

Take a look at the video above for more from Miyamoto on Luigi. There’s even more here.
