Satoru Iwata made a quick mention of a Wii U Virtual Console back in November. At the time, only two aspects were confirmed – that yes, Nintendo is working on the service for its new console, and it will support the GamePad.
A Nintendo of America has reconfirmed the Wii U Virtual Console and Off-TV play to Kotaku, but wouldn’t divulge any additional information.
The representative said:
“We do not have any specifics to share at this time. However, we are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone.”

Iwata comments on lack of regular Nintendo Direct at the end of December

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata briefly took over the company’s Japanese Twitter account earlier this morning. In a message to fans, Iwata commented on the lack of a regular Nintendo Direct at the end of December.
The explanation is simple. It all came down to the fact that Nintendo didn’t have time to prepare materials for a broadcast. The timing wasn’t there to make it happen as well.
Nintendo does like to stream broadcasts regularly, so I’m sure it won’t be long before another presentation pops up.
GameStop sells 320,000 Wii U units during the holiday period

GameStop saw a decrease in hardware sales during the holiday period last year. However, the retailer was boosted by a “successful” Wii U launch.
Chief executive officer Paul Raines said:
“GameStop experienced mixed results during the holiday selling period. Our successful Wii U launch, strong digital growth and continued momentum in the mobile space were countered by a decline in store traffic. As a result, GameStop expects its fourth quarter 2012 earnings per share results to be at the low end of its current guidance range. Our strong market share positions us well for the future, and we look forward to new product launches in 2013.”
Through a six week period, GameStop moved 320,000 Wii U units worldwide. In early December, Nintendo confirmed that it had sold 425,000 systems in the US during its first week of availability. Wii U sold nearly 558,000 units in Japan over a three week period. Nintendo has not shared data for its European territories.

Zen Studios explains Zen Pinball 2 delay

Zen Pinball 2 was originally set to launch on the Wii U eShop in December. Obviously that didn’t happen. The studio is now hoping to have the game ready to go sometime this month.
But why the delay? Community manager “BarbieBobomb” explained that Zen Pinball 2 is the first free download title with paid content on any Nintendo system. As a result, Zen Studios and the Big N have been working extra hard to avoid any potential issues.
“Zen Pinball 2 is the first game of its kind on any Nintendo system (free platform download with paid DLC) so we’re working with Nintendo to make sure there are no issues at launch. It’s a first for them, so we’re doing what we can to make sure everything goes smoothly, even if it means delaying a bit.”
