Ubisoft planning on supporting Wii U’s digital strategy

Ubisoft has become a big player in the digital space. For instance, the company has looked to make virtual versions of their games available on platforms while also releasing retail copies.
When it comes to Wii U, Ubisoft’s digital boss Chris Early said the company will be looking to “take advantage of whatever the policies will let us do with the platform”. Their plans are vague because Nintendo hasn’t shared much information about the console’s digital capabilities, but Ubisoft will definitely be a big supporter in the future.
Early said:
“We’ll absolutely take advantage of whatever the policies will let us do with the platform from the standpoint of providing digital content.
“Nintendo has not announced a lot of their digital programs at this point of time. Our key is, as you see from us from a content perspective in supporting the platform, is we’re going to be there like we were with the Vita, and support the policy side of it as well. With the Vita all of our games are available digitally, and they’re even optimised from that standpoint because that was a policy in place we were able to design to.
“So from the same standpoint, I expect when the Wii U comes out and there are digital policies that are there, we will be in support of them as well.”
Nintendo of America celebrates 3DS anniversary with Reggie Fils-Aime Mii

Nintendo of Europe celebrated the 3DS’ one year anniversary over the weekend by sending out a special Satoru Iwata Mii. The system turned one year old in North America today, and NOA has followed up with a Reggie Fils-Aime avatar.

Namco Bandai’s mystery teaser site was updated earlier today.
This time, we’ve been given a small clue! The text on the site says “??? x Action Adventure.”
Silicon Knights on Eternal Darkness IP ownership, sequel, says Nintendo is their silent partner

Update: Despite the upload date on DailyMotion, it turns out that the interview is several years old. Having said that, there’s still a good amount of hope for Eternal Darkness 2…
No one knows what Silicon Knights is working on currently – other than the folks inside the studio of course.
Eternal Darkness is arguably the company’s most-successful title (at least in terms of its critical reception), so fans have been hoping that they may return to the IP one day. Nintendo renewed the Eternal Darkness trademark a couple years back, and Silicon Knights head Denis Dyack did recently say that a sequel isn’t too much to ask for.
So can we expect Eternal Darkness II then? Well, that’s still not clear, nor is the status of the IP’s ownership.
When asked about the ownership of the Eternal Darkness franchise (Nintendo or Silicon Knights), Dyack wouldn’t reveal the answer. He was also unwilling to talk about a sequel. Apparently some people have interpreted some of his previous quotes as a confirmation that Eternal Darkness 2 is in the works, but that was never the case.
Dyack did say something very interesting about Silicon Knights’ relationship with Nintendo, though. He stated, “Nintendo is still our silent partner – a lot of people don’t know that.”
“That’s a question we’ve never answered. And at the end of the day, it’s not time to even talk about those kind of things for various different reasons. Nintendo is still our silent partner – a lot of people don’t know that. We have a great relationship with those guys and it’s not time to talk about Eternal Darkness 2. I’ve had so many questions and it’s been interpreted a couple of times where I said, ‘Yes, we’re working on Eternal Darkness 2.’ We’ve never said that. So, sorry. That’s the best I can give you.”
Dyack was later pushed about the IP’s ownership again, but still wouldn’t provide an answer:
“It’s a complicated question with a complicated answer and we’re not answering the question.”

Warren Spector quiet about Epic Mickey 2 on Wii U

Unlike the original, Epic Mickey 2 is coming to practically every major platform. The game is in the works for the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. There’s even a unique project in development for the 3DS.
Rumors were swirling about Wii U support prior to Epic Mickey 2’s official announcement. The speculation indicated that the title would either get its own version for Nintendo’s new console, or it would make use of the console’s tablet in some form.
We still don’t actually know if there’s a Wii U version is on the way following the reveal for Epic Mickey 2. Disney Interactive simply hasn’t commented on the matter… and neither has Warren Spector.
Spector was quizzed about a Wii U version in an interview with GT.TV’s Geoff Keighley, but he never really addressed the question.
Spector said:
“Whatever system you have, Wasteland will be there, Mickey Mouse will be there, the fun of Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Two will be there.”
So we still don’t have an official comment/denial that Epic Mickey 2 isn’t in development for Wii U…
First Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion details

The first Epic Mickey 2 details have arrived from the latest issue of Nintendo Power. We learn that Dreamrift is making a sprite-based follow-up to the first Epic Mickey, and it appears to be a spiritual successor to Castle of Illusion for the Sega Genesis.
For the first bits of information, read on below.
– Game is a follow-up to Epic Mickey as well as Castle of Illusion (classic Sega Genesis game)
– Heavy use of the stylus
– Tap item icons that are in every level to “paint” (trace) items into existence
– This includes cliffs, cannons, floating platforms
– Better tracing will cause better things to happen
– Flawlessly-painted canon will only damage Mickey’s enemies
– Messing up the painting can result in danger to everyone in the area
– Sometimes have to erase objects
– Erase with thinner by using the stylus
– Hand-drawn sprites
– Every level is based on an animated Disney adventure
– This includes “Sleeping Beauty”, “Peter Pan”, and “Tangled”
– Each character Mickey saves will take up residence in the fortress that Mickey uses as his home base
– This fortress is a hub
– Characters will decorate the fort
– Witch from Snow White is the main villain
– Worlds from all eras of Disney
– Scrooge Mcduck, Oswald, and Minnie is in the game

A few days ago, Nintendo of Europe added the Iwata Asks: Spirit Camera interview to their website. Keisuke Kikuchi, Toshiharu Izuno, Kozo Makino, and Satoru Iwata participated in the discussion.
I’ve finally had a moment to read through and transcribe a number of points from the interview. You can find all of the details below. The group goes into the project’s development process including how the first pitch was essentially Fatal Frame ported to the 3DS, title ideas, and more.
Reminder: Kid Icarus: Uprising weapon gems being sent out through SpotPass

A quick reminder to the Kid Icarus: Uprising players out there.
Nintendo has started to transmit SpotPass gems for the game (this actually began a couple of days ago), which can be used to acquire new weapons. Be aware that all gems can be found in the StreetPass menu – even ones acquired through SpotPass!
