Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted to investors that the 3DS is off to a slow start. It’s true that initial sales of the handheld were encouraging, though they’ve tailed off considerably since then.

Iwata believes that delaying development of certain software was to blame, as was the lack of online features. The Nintendo eShop launched just a few days ago.

Iwata explained that as more online features are readied and more significant titles are released, sales of the 3DS should pick up.

“So, first I think it’s fair to say that while Nintendo 3DS had a strong launch day, the results since then have not met our expectations.

By which I mean to say that although pre-orders for this system were very strong and initial impressions of this system were very positive, those early indicators stand in conflict with where the system is at today. So, I can’t say there are no issues at present.

If you’re looking for a console that can play DVDs, you’re going to have to find a system other than Wii U. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that Wii U is unable to play DVDs. Iwata explained that it would be expensive to incorporate a player into the console due to patents and most consumers already have machines that can play DVDs.

Iwata also confirmed that the console will not support Blu-ray disks.

He told investors:

“Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities.

The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”

I think that I’ve finally completed the necessary maintenance to link the main site and forum. They should be fully connected now and it appears that things are back to the way they were about a week ago. I say this with a bit of hesitance since I was under the impression that things were fully functional earlier this week, but further testing alerted me to the fact that the site was not completely repaired.

I was actually expecting the maintenance to take longer, perhaps as long as later this weekend, but fortunately I was able to nail down the last few issues. Please let me know if things aren’t working on your end. You can make a comment on this post, somewhere else on the forum, or notify us about any problems via email.

This information comes from Epic’s Mark Rein…

“I can tell you that I got to see it at E3 and it was what I expected of course. We were very excited to play some of their demos, see how good the feel of the hardware was — it’s a very impressive system and I think it’s gonna do quite well. If Nintendo made a system that could run our engine, we’d be on it like water on fish.’ And so when someone asked me what I thought about the Wii U, I said, ‘Water, meet fish.'”

Rein didn’t explicitly say that Unreal Engine 3 is running on Wii U, but he more or less implied it. Rein has had a longstanding history with the Wii, mainly relating to him saying over the years that the console can’t handle the technology. Now that the Wii U stacks up to other consoles (and perhaps surpasses them in some ways), there’s no way that Unreal Engine 3 couldn’t run on the system.
