Wii U

Players will be able to download and install a small update for the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World when the game launches. Nintendo Life reports that the patch clocks in at 46MB for the European copy. It’s unclear what the update does at present, but the site speculates that it could be related to enabling online and Miiverse connectivity.

“There was nothing that you could put in front of everybody that said, ‘This is what the experience is.’ I think one of the things that was a real indicator of that was just, anecdotally, if you went into a retailer and you talked to somebody in the games department, they didn’t even understand what it was. I did the secret shopper kind of thing, and they would say, ‘Well, there’s no difference between the Wii and Wii U.’ I’m standing there, looking at them, going, ‘Wow!’ I think that right there was an anecdotal piece of evidence [showing] that people didn’t get it.

“There should have been a Wii Sports-type game that let everybody get it. Those huge franchises would have gotten the loyal Nintendo person, but it was Wii Sports that got all the people outside the Nintendo world to look and say, ‘This is a really, really neat, fun thing to do.’

“I think there was something really special about the Wii and the way that whole thing happened that they didn’t even know was going to happen. I don’t think there was the possibility that the Wii U was ever going to repeat that. I’m not sure they expected that [either].”

– IHS Electronics & Media’s Senior Games Analyst Christine Arrington

Arrington does not give any details on her research, and the only concrete evidence she brings to the table is anecdotal. This appears to be purely speculative.

A third Splinter Cell: Blacklist is out now on Wii U. The update addresses various elements in single-player, multiplayer, and more.

You can find the full patch notes after the break.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends didn’t perform quite as well as Ubisoft had hoped. Both saw lower-than-anticipated sales, the publisher said during a financial call earlier today. Neither game managed to reach Ubisoft’s original targets.

During the call, no specific sales numbers were divulged. That leaves us wondering just how much Blacklist and Rayman have sold over the past few months.

A huge amount of staffers contributed to the development of Assassin’s Creed IV. Specifically, game director Ashraf Ismail says over 900 people worked on the project.

Ismail’s confirmation came about when Examiner asked about a potential “Assassin’s Creed Universe” game. He explained that doing so would be difficult given how much attention is required for just one world. Multiple worlds would require even more manpower.

Ismail later revealed that Assassin’s Creed IV offers about two hours of cinematics, and eventually concluded that an Assassin’s Creed title with “multiple, big worlds” is unlikely.

Ubisoft has delayed the launch of Watch_Dogs, the publisher announced today. The game will now ship in spring 2014.

Over on the official Ubisoft blog, communications manager Gary Steinman explained, “it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.”
