Spector believes Epic Mickey is the best-looking Wii game, Epic Mickey 2 talk
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii | 0 comments
Warren Spector believes that the Epic Mickey team created “the best looking Wii game ever”. He won’t try to push his opinion on anyone – that’s just the way he feels!
“As obnoxious as it sounds, I still think the first Mickey game was the best looking Wii game ever that anyone’s ever made so sue me. I love the way the game looks. I’m not saying anyone else has to agree, it’s just my opinion.”
That’s not all. Spector also thinks Epic Mickey “sounds better than any Wii game ever”. With Epic Mickey 2, Junction Point will be looking to push things even further.
According to Spector:
“I also think it sounds better than any Wii game ever [laughing] but you can always do better. We’re going to. When people see the 2D levels, the 2D side-scrolling levels in the new game I think they’re going to see that the team has taken those to a whole new level.”
Since the basics of Epic Mickey 2 have already been set in stone, his team will not be able to maintain a deeper focus on gameplay:
“We’ve already talked about camera and voice – of course we’re going to do better this time around – we built a studio and team, a world, a code base, a game engine, we established our relationships with everyone at Nintendo and Disney with the first game.
“This time around we know what the world is, we know who the characters are, we know what the gameplay is. What are paint and thinner for? We didn’t even know that when we started the first game. So I would hope that everything will be better this time around.”
Beamdog founder surprised by reaction to comments, may consider Wii U development

Beamdog founder Trent Oster is surprised by the reaction to his comments regarding the company’s experience with Nintendo and the WiiWare service.
Oster noted how his beliefs are apparently widespread across the development community. Additionally, his initial message on Twitter wasn’t in-depth due to the site’s character limit. Even though “feedback has mostly been agreement and support about how Nintendo can improve”, Oster has received some backlash.
“I was surprised by the reaction to my comments. What I stated has been said a great deal within the industry, I guess I didn’t get the memo about not posting it publicly. Given the 140 character limit of Twitter and my cranky 3am mindset, my comment was also a pretty choppy sound bite. The feedback has mostly been agreement and support about how Nintendo can improve. But, I now have a few people who randomly appear on the various social networks and troll me.”
Iwata says some people felt Wii wasn’t for them, games with “depth” before “width”

Nintendo achieved its goal with the Wii by bringing gaming to the masses. There were, however, some consumers who felt left out – specifically hardcore gamers.
This is something that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted to during the company’s latest financial results briefing Q&A. Iwata also pointed out how they were unable to convince casual players to experience titles “frequently or for long, consistent periods”, leading to a poor level of profit.
With the 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo would like to promote both hardcore and casual experiences (described by Iwata as “deeper” and “wider”, something he mentioned at last year’s E3). According to Iwata, the “depth” component “was not satisfactory for some consumers”, and so they are working on this first.
Iwata: 3DS/Wii U realize what DS/Wii can’t, starting from scratch would be wrong

During the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s financial results briefing last week, one investor asked president Satoru Iwata if the 3DS and Wii U are improved versions of the DS and Wii. While this person believes the situation surrounding the 3DS will improve thanks to strong sales in Japan, he wondered if the system will “evolve to become something revolutionary and completely different from the Nintendo DS”. He asked a similar question about Wii U.
Iwata responded by saying that Nintendo can’t just throw away what they’ve done with their previous systems and start from scratch. He understood where the investor was coming from, but said “the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U so that each of them is able to realize what has been impossible with the existing systems”. Moreover, he stated that these systems have been made “so that they can realize what has been impossible.”
You can find Iwata’s entire, lengthy response below.

Key game industry figures pick their favorite unnoticed Wii games
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii | 0 comments
There are a lot of great Wii games out there that didn’t garner much attention from consumers. This is something that applies to both retail games and WiiWare releases. We’re talking about titles such as Boom Blox, Excitebots: Trick Racing, and Trauma Team.
GamesBeat contacted a number of key game industry figures – including well-known Nintendo of America employees Bill Trinen (Miyamoto’s translator!) and Nate Bihldorff – for their thoughts on the best unnoticed Wii games.
Here are their selections:
Nicalis cancels La-Mulana WiiWare publishing plans in North America/Europe
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii | 0 comments
La-Mulana will not be released on the North American and European Wii Shop Channels. That’s according to Nicalis, who shared the news on its Twitter account.
The studio said:
“Regarding La-Mulana, we have chosen to cancel publishing in North America and Europe for WiiWare. …We’ve waited, too. We’re sorry to have to announce, but we’ve waited for them to finish the game for over two years.”
La-Mulana was originally created for the PC in 2005. The WiiWare version was announced nearly three years ago. The game did make it out on the Japanese Wii Shop Channel, but it’s truly a shame North America/European Wii owners won’t be able to experience the game.
