The NPD Group does not typically release hardware and software sales data for video games, which means we generally must rely on leaks and clues coming from official statements to piece together data.

In the case of the March 2013 report, we may have figures for almost all major platforms. A leak has allegedly sprung up on 2ch, and while we typically tend to be hesitant in sharing official information from that source, numbers listed on the message board do sound feasible.

The figures are as follows:

?3DS 230K?+1%? (nearly confirmed based on NPD analysis)
?Wii 91K??47%?
?Wii U 67K
?PS3 211K??36%?
?360 261K??30%?(official)

Assuming the data above is correct, that would mean the DS sold 86,000 units, the PS Vita moved 33,000 units, and the PSP tacked on another 8,000 units.

If you’re a 3DS owner, it’d be tough to find something shown in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct not to be excited about. New Zelda and Yoshi games are coming, a new Mario Party entry is on the way, and there are other titles in the pipeline such as Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario Golf: World Tour.

One observation about yesterday’s announcements: Nintendo’s own content is based on existing franchises rather than IP.

Nintendo director of product marketing Bill Trinen explained why the Big N continues to revisit franchises while speaking with GameSpot:

Nintendo has been rather secretive when it comes to The Wonderful 101’s release date. The last time the publisher mentioned Platinum Games’ Wii U project, it was set to launch in the first half of 2013.

Time is running out. And at this point, it’s completely unknown when Wii U owners can expect the game’s arrival. But here’s a possible hint from Nintendo – the company’s German press server lists the title for a June 6 release.

I’m a bit skeptical of that date given how little we’ve heard about the game in recent months, but you never know…

For all intents and purposes, the new Zelda game for 3DS is A Link to the Past 2. Nintendo of Japan more or less called the project by this name during the Japanese Nintendo Direct broadcast today.

Nintendo is being slightly more nebulous about its title overseas. While the company has acknowledged that the new game takes place in the Link to the Past world, they’re not calling it A Link to the Past 2 just yet. The final title for North America is still under consideration, according to Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen.

He told Joystiq:

“There is a ‘2’ in the Japanese title. So, yeah, I think as I described today, it’s an all-new game, it is an all-new story. From a story perspective there are connections, so it does fall after A Link to the Past. And it’s set in the same world, but introduces that new gameplay mechanic. So, yeah, I guess by that definition …”

Nintendo announced a new Zelda title for the 3DS today, which is pretty much a sequel to A Link to the Past.

The two games really are quite similar – especially in terms of their overworld layouts. Based on footage provided by Nintendo, fans have managed to compile and compare maps from the original SNES game and the 3DS follow-up.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime commented on a whole bunch of interesting topics while speaking with the media today.

Most items revolved around the 3DS – including the success of digital sales, sales milestones, and the eShop – but Reggie also commented a bit on the Wii U, Nintendo’s focus on titles as opposed to non-gaming entertainment, and the company’s situation with Amazon.
