Wii U

During a Reddit AMA session that took place earlier today, Insomniac founder and CEO Ted Price commented ever so briefly on the Wii U.

When asked for his thoughts about the console as well as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360 successor, Price said that he considers it to be “more current gen”, adding: “we’re not working on games for it.”

“Wii-U is something I’d consider more current gen – but we’re not working on games for it.”

Whether Wii U is current-gen or next-gen is something that has been debated ever since the console’s initial announcement. We’ve seen some developers believe it is next-gen to to what it offers and the fact that it is a brand new release, but others feel otherwise based on the system’s specs.

Q-Games is the developer behind Star Fox Command as well as Star Fox 64 3D. You may also know of the studio for the DSiWare games it created, including Starship Defence.

Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing any of Q-Games on the 3DS “in the immediate future”. President Dylan Cuthbert told Siliconera:

“Not at the moment because we’ve got quite a lot of projects currently on the boil, that kind of thing. We’re a bit busy, so there won’t be any 3DS in the immediate future, at least.”

Cuthbert also gave his own opinion as to what Nintendo needs to do with the Wii U in both Japan and the west:

“I think software. If they are going to win they are going to have to figure out the games. They probably need like new super IP, a special IP that makes people really interested. But they always come up with something. They are always very innovative. Even with the DS when it first came out people said that’s not very good and it’s not going to do very well, but it sold hundreds of millions and had lots of innovative titles. I think they will find something that will sell a lot. Who would have known Wii Fit would have sold like 15 million units?”

The multiplayer in Ubisoft’s upcoming game Watch Dogs will have elements of a game mechanic called “player invasion”, which means that players that aren’t explicitly in your game can come in and modify certain parameters or change small environmental obstacles seemingly without you ever seeing them. It’s something implemented into the game Dark Souls, but we’re unsure if Watch Dogs‘ version of the idea will be more in line with that adventure or if it will be something completely different.

On top of that, the game’s producer outlined the concept behind a smartphone app that will be coming out alongside the game this fall. If you’ve seen gameplay footage of Watch Dogs, you’ll know that the main character uses his smartphone to hack into city systems, ATMs, and much more. The smartphone app will allow players to “hack” into multiplayer games of Watch Dogs on the fly, presumably to modify in-game parameters similar to what you might do in the single player experience. I think that’s pretty dang awesome!

Want to get free Resident Evil: Revelations HD-related merchandise? Head over to London where Capcom has opened up what they’re calling the first ever blood-filled swimming pool. Of course, it isn’t actually filled with blood: It’s just a lot of water, a lot of red colouring, and floaties shapes like bodies and human entrails and things. You know, normal stuff.

Here’s the run-down:

– Open May 25th and 26th
– In Jupiter Wharf, London E3 2PL
– Ages 16 and older, with under 18 needed adult accompaniment
– Only 100 people allowed in each day, free tickets online
– Free prizes at the bottom of the pool for those “brave enough” to go down there
– PR statement: “Capcom are thrilled to able to create the world’s first blood swimming pool. Zombies have been kept very busy lately doing a variety of PR stunts, so rather than do the expected, we wanted to give them some time off for canal side relaxation in London. To non-zombies, the swimming pool will be shocking, gory and an incredibly disturbing experience – the perfect way to show that survival horror is back with a bang for Resident Evil Revelations”

GameStop is handing out a bonus with LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Wii U pre-orders. All consumers who reserve the game will receive an exclusive Lex Luthor Mini Figurine. There isn’t a photo of the figurine yet, but you should be getting the bonus at launch.

SEGA’s latest financial results are in, and it has brought along some encouraging news for the Wii U and 3DS.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed sales at 1.36 million in the US and Europe. 310,000 units were sold on Wii U worldwide, and another 190,000 copies were moved on 3DS.

Even better, it would seem that SEGA is planning seven SKUs for Wii U in the coming year, which is the same number as the PlayStation 3 and four more than the Xbox 360. While most of these SKUs are likely new games, SEGA could be counting items such as special editions as well.

The 3DS will be receiving continued support as well with six SKUs in the pipeline. There aren’t any SKUs coming to the DS, unsurprisingly.

For both the Wii U and 3DS, SEGA expects to move just slightly below one million in software sales for each platform.

A bunch of new Watch Dogs previews have gone live today following a press event held by Ubisoft a few days ago. We’ve rounded up details from one of these articles – coming from Eurogamer – in the summary below.

You’ll learn more about Watch Dogs’ hacking elements, connection to other players, and more. Also be sure to view new screenshots here.

– Been in development for four years
– Team has placed a big focus on the NPCs’ behavior and personalities
– You’ll be involved with other events when not on a main mission
– Bios flash for a few moments as you pass NPCs
– Examples: “refuses to cycle”, “trolls religious forums”
– Hack into phones, scroll through text messages and tap into conversations, with relevant locations relating to what was discussed marked on the map for later inspection
– Game doesn’t have “a bunch of minions creating personalities one after another”
– NPCs themselves are the product of another system.
– “Every backstory, every look – it’s based on a database. Some of the population will dynamically end up in certain scenarios based upon their personalities, but you’ll never see a mugging, for example, happen in the same way twice.”
– Won’t be bombarded with side-content
– Another system controls how much of it is doled out, depending on how often you participate in it
– The game’s main narrative arc remains under wraps, but there are hints that player interaction in side-missions will draw parallels with the way that Aiden Pearce personally becomes more obsessed and drawn into the actions of Chicago’s population
– Two types of hacking abilities: small-scale actions and larger-scale actions
– Small-scale: scanning passers-by, disabling a nearby car’s security system, etc.
– Larger-scale: access the city-wide Central Operating System (CTOS)
– Access CTOS district-by-district by storming local datacentres
– With CTOS access, Pearce can use the city’s surveillance technology to identify new side-missions and follow-up on potential crimes
– Side-content isn’t always about crimes
– One sequence has you gaining access to a local W-iFi hub and peering into someone’s home
– Watch Dogs will also include opportunities for you to interact with other human players in your single-player game
– “Say you’re playing alone, free-roaming. There’s a bunch of activities you can activate. Sometimes – and you won’t know when – the objective that you have is related to what someone else is doing at the same time. When that happens we merge your reality with the other person’s, and you’ll be able to see them.”
– Ex: spy on another hacker; it’s a real player carrying out an objective within their own game who had unknowingly become part of your city
– Sometimes you will be told if another player will be watching you during these objectives, sometimes you won’t
– Multiplayer mode planned
– Expected to take 80 hours to complete everything in the game
– Access a smartphone full of apps to activate contracts, drop glyphs for friends to find, or look up a tune playing on a nearby radio
– Version of iTunes lets you buy new apps and games with in-game money
– No micro-transactions
– AR shooter mini-game sees nearby NPCs attacked by purple Metroid-esque aliens, with high scores recorded on global leaderboards
– A number of ideas were cut, team is saving the list for the future
