Wii U

I made this video back on Wednesday (hence why it sounds like I thought the Nintendo Direct was “today”) but neglected to put it up because I feel as though its production values are rather low. Still, I think I trust you guys to be able to look passed the low recording quality and poor editing just this once to see the point I’m trying to make. What’s the point I’m trying to make?

Xenoblade is way more colorful (and in my opinion better looking) than Monolith Soft’s new game “X”. I think “X” looks like baloney visually, even if the game will be good for other aspects.

We have one or two more features coming today and this is the least important of them so I’m just tossing it up in the afternoon willy nilly. Expect a new ‘Two People Playin’ Games’ beta episode and a new ‘Here’s a Podcast’ later tonight!

Given how Tomb Raider’s launch is on the horizon – it’s coming out on March 5 – it’s safe to say that it won’t be heading to Wii U. That means Straight Right’s secret Wii U port for Square Enix is a different game.

But why isn’t Tomb Raider coming to Wii U? Creative director Noah Hughes explained:

On Monday, Nintendo will carry out “emergency” maintenance for its various online services. The Wii U eShop, 3DS eShop, DSi Shop, and Wii Shop Channel will all be inaccessible. Additionally, the Pokemon Black/White and Pokemon Black/White 2 services will be affected, as will Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper’s online functionality.

Most of the maintenance will start and end on Monday. The full downtime listings can be found below.

This month’s Game Informer review scores are as follows:

DmC Devil May Cry – 9.0
Guardians of Middle-earth – 7.5
Ni no Kuni – 7.0
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Dragonborn – 8.5
Skulls of the Shogun – 8.5
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault – 7.5
Transformers Prime (Wii U) – 6.5
Little Inferno – 8.5
Planets Under Attack – 7.25
Chasing Aurora – 6.5
Rise of the Guardians – 6.5
Crashmo – 8.5
Tank! Tank! Tank! – 4.5
Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse – 4.5

Ever wanted to play solitaire on the Wii U? One website has now made it possible to do so.

Boot up your Wii U Internet browser and head on over to this link. You can then play the entire game right on the GamePad. Should be simple enough!

The GDC awards are a pretty big deal, because it’s one of the few gaming awards shows that isn’t chosen by the public and isn’t chosen by some big name media company (like the VGAs)– the winners of this award are chosen by developers, for developers. Winning one of these means your peers who work in the same industry as you think highly of your product, and that’s a pretty cool thing!

You can find the nominees for all of the GDC Awards this year (which happens on March 27th at GDC) after the jump.

Capcom is continuing to highlight creatures from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The latest, Great Wroggi, is a Bird Wyvern in the game.

Great Wroggi screenshots and details are posted below, straight from Capcom-Unity.

TOKYO, JAPAN — JANUARY 26, 2013 — Index Corporation (headquarters: Setagaya, Tokyo, CEO: Yoshimi Ogawa) has announced a collaboration with Nintendo Co., Ltd. on a new RPG for the recently launched game console, Wii Uâ„¢. The collaboration was unveiled as part of the Nintendo Direct presentation on Wednesday. The title is a joint effort between the ATLUS brand and the Nintendo Fire Emblem series.

The ATLUS brand has released many popular titles including the Shin Megami Tensei series and Persona series. Recognizing the raving fan base of the Shin Megami Tensei series, and considering ATLUS brand’s commitment to high quality content and game development, the partnership is a natural fit for the two brands.

Currently, Index is earnestly proceeding with development, while Nintendo will deliver news out to the customers.

Prior to this announcement, Index had only developed and released games from its own brand, ATLUS, but this collaboration is intended to be a new step for multimedia expansion.

From this joint development, Index hopes to expand its own brand, as well as optimize the efficiency of its resource placement and increase revenue.

If you’re one of the folks waiting patiently for Zen Pinball 2, you shouldn’t have to wait much longer according to the game’s developer:

The game was supposed to come out back in December, and now the tentative release date is “January”. My guess is that it’s going to be early February though, because I don’t think they can finish it up, send it to Nintendo, get it approved, and get a release date before the end of the month. It just doesn’t seem like it’d happen!

It all sounds like technical mumbo jumbo at first– after all, why should you care about the refresh rate of a console?– but when you watch the following video you should notice a difference between the left and right images:

It’s not terribly striking, is it? I didn’t think so either, but the one on the right is using a visual refresh rate of 50Hz (standard for older PAL releases) as opposed to the NTSC standard of 60Hz. What does this mean? It means, essentially, that the European version literally runs slower (visuals and music included) than the other versions of the game because their televisions used to only refresh at a rate of 50 times per second. You notice in the video that the NTSC player gets much farther much faster than the PAL player– that’s due to the PAL version’s slowdown.

It also apparently makes the image slightly blurrier and more compressed looking… apparently. Someone should capture it in full HD so I can decide whether that is worth getting up in arms about or not!
