Beyond Good & Evil 2

Ubisoft’s Michel Ancel, creator of both the Rayman and the Beyond Good & Evil franchises, caused quite a stir this morning when he posted some Beyond Good & Evil concept artwork on his Instagram account, along with the line “Somewhere in system 4 … – Thanks ubisoft for making this possible !” The artwork seems to show Pey’j from the first game, only much younger, leading fans to speculate that Beyond Good & Evil 2 might be a prequel.

It also doesn’t seem like Ancel made this post by accident or without approval from the higher ups at Ubisoft – the Ubisoft France Twitter account urged fans to take a look at the Instagram post.

While this all seems to be pretty conclusively pointing at a Beyond Good & Evil sequel, keep in mind that it’s not quite an official confirmation yet, and also that this might not be on a Nintendo platform. There have been rumors that Beyond Good & Evil 2 might be a Nintendo-funded NX exclusive, but of course, these might just be rumors and nothing more. We will keep you updated.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first made known nearly a decade ago. Yet despite that, we’ve heard next to nothing about the project since then.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot did offer up some words of encouragement during the official YouTube E3 stream. He told host Geoff Keighley that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is “still on the way”, and that it’s something we’ll see at some point.

Guillemot added that creator Michel Ancel is working on it, but he’s currently handling two games – the other being Wild. It’s coming along, but Ancel needs to spend more time on the project.

Destructoid shared a rumor earlier in the year claiming that Nintendo is funding Beyond Good & Evil 2 as an NX exclusive. Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen.

Destructoid is reporting that Nintendo is funding Beyond Good & Evil 2. Better yet, the site claims that the game is planned as an NX exclusive for 2017. It would be a move similar to that of Bayonetta 2 on Wii U, which could help Nintendo generate goodwill with gamers by helping bring the much-desired sequel to its new platform as an exclusive.

Destructoid’s initial source originates from Alexander Maier, who recently posted a series of rumors about NX which I personally found rather dubious. However, the outlet “also reached out to a second source, who independently gave a number of the same bullet points regarding the future of Beyond Good and Evil. The number of points of crossover between these two sources suggests that this rumor, while not confirmed by Nintendo, may hold water.”

The new game may be currently carrying the working title “Beyond Good and Evil: The Prejudices of Philosophers”. This is said to be “a reference to a specific chapter in the philosophical text Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, which details how morality can be altered by authority, and the ways black-and-white morality overlooks the larger complexity of the nature of morals.”

As with all rumors, we can’t stress enough that this report should be taken with a grain of salt. If it were to be accurate though, it’d be a very interesting move on Nintendo’s part.
