FAST Racing Neo has been in the works since the end of 2012
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U eShop | 14 Comments
Shin’en has been working on FAST Racing Neo for quite some time. In an interview with KonsoliFIN, the studio’s Manfred Linzner revealed that Neo’s development kicked off at the end of 2012. The game began soon after Shin’en wrapped up Nano Assault Neo.
Linzner also spoke about how the team faced a “major challenge” to match or surpass other racers on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC from a visual perspective. The task was made all the more difficult since Shin’en wanted to hit 60 frames per second.
Below are Linzner’s full words:
We started with FAST Racing Neo right after we were done with Nano Assault Neo. So this was end of 2012. A major challenge was to get on par or even beyond what other racing games on PC,PS4 or XB1 offer visually. Those games are done by very large and professional teams (around 30x to 100x times bigger then us). Just the sheer amount of geometry you need to produce for that sweet ‘Nex Gen’ look is insane. Not even to mention the nearly impossible task to render that all at 60fps on the Wii U. Anyway, we liked that challenge. We feel we do our best work when being challenged. You need to find creative ways.

Shin’en shares an update on FAST Racing Neo, sticking with Nintendo platforms
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News, Wii U eShop | 9 Comments
We’ve still yet to see a proper reveal of FAST Racing Neo. The game was announced last year, and only screenshots have trickled in since then.
Shin’en probably hasn’t had much to say since the team is very busy with development. Art director Martin Sauter told Nintendo Life that FAST Racing Neo is the studio’s “biggest project we’ve worked on for a long time.”
It still sounds like Neo won’t be released in the near future. Shin’en has “something running and the gameplay is fine”, though content still needs to be added.
Sauter said:
Definitely, it is the biggest project we’ve worked on for a long time. It’s just much more work to get that quality level of racing on consoles this generation has given us, so we have to look at; we can’t deliver at a level below that. The Wii U is a great machine, so we need to add so many things to hit that level and we’re pretty sure we can achieve that, but it takes time to build it up and put it together. We’re in a good way though, we have something running and the gameplay is fine, so we just need to add content.
The core of the game is basically done. It’s just content now, which is a lot of work. We’re small, it needs time, but I’m very optimistic that you’ll see something that Nintendo console fans can be happy with.

A few FAST Racing Neo technical tidbits
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U eShop | 7 Comments
Over the week or so, Shin’en has been sharing a few technical tidbits about FAST Racing Neo. The studio interacted with fans about the game’s frame rate and more.
Here’s the full roundup:
@MaxWill37699872 Yeah, streets took a lot of resolution. Tho biggest textures are used for the shadows.
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) September 24, 2014
@CrucialSloan 60fps (with minimal dips here and there that we try to iron out)
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) September 24, 2014
@realkeithmartin Cinematic Tonemapping, Motionblur, SSAO, HDR Bloom, Atmospheric Scattering, Godrays etc
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) September 25, 2014
@realkeithmartin Smoke and mirrors all over the place, otherwise we would be at 20fps.
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) September 26, 2014
@AVahne @realkeithmartin No, we use realtime soft shadows. So we can have dynamic weather and the games size is much smaller.
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) October 1, 2014
@HylianCIA @ShinenGames It's realtime. As a race is just a few minutes there are not much visible changes, beside some clouds moving.
— Shin'en Multimedia (@ShinenGames) October 1, 2014
@CrucialSloan SSAO is by definition dynamic, tho it's (almost) impossible to get working in 60fps ๐ Technically: Every console is outdated

How FAST Racing Neo will improve upon its predecessor
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U eShop | 0 comments
With FAST Racing Neo, developer Shin’en will be looking to make a few improvements to the game’s predecessor.
First, phase switching has been “streamlined” and it’s now “more fun to use.” Shin’en also adjusted the AI so that it’s more human-like.
Shin’en Manfred Linzner told Nintendon:
First of all we analyzed what people liked and disliked in the original Wii game. For instance, most people enjoyed the unique phase switching gameplay, because itโs something you have in no other racing game.
So we build on that but tried to make it more streamlined and more fun to use. Something most people disliked was the brutal difficulty in higher leagues, because the Ai was simply too perfect. We made sure that the Ai behaves more โhumanโ this time.
