Iwata on 3DS/Wii U profitability, Mario Kart/Smash will drive Wii U, more

Thanks to the 3DS’ install base, Nintendo now feels that it can turn a profit with the system’s software. President Satoru Iwata mentioned to investors last week that the company has “many key titles to be released in this calendar year and we will strive to drive profits from these titles.” 3DS overall is expected to be “the key profit-driver for the next fiscal year”.
With Wii U, on the other hand, Iwata admitted that “it is not easy to make a significant profit with the current units sold.” But with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. acting “as our main drivers”, Nintendo “would like to make sure that the markets will thoroughly acknowledge the value of Wii U, including the titles that we have released to date.”

During the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s investor briefing held earlier in the week, Shigeru Miyamoto reconfirmed that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will launch this year. Miyamoto didn’t mention the 3DS version in his response, in case you’re wondering. I don’t think it’s worth making much of yet, but it’d be interesting if the two versions had separate launches.

Pic of the day. The heroic Aura Pokémon, Lucario, joins the battle!! We’ve increased the influence of Aura this time, so a damaged Lucario is truly a force to be reckoned with.
Lucario joined the battle for the first time in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released six years ago. The production staff of Brawl worked really hard to expand the character roster–without their efforts, Lucario probably never would have joined the battle.

Pic of the day. Both Link and Pit use bows, but when they fire simultaneously, their arrows meet and cancel out closer to Pit. Besides attack power and projectile speed, there are many elements that affect tactics, such as accuracy, vulnerability after attacking, and even seemingly unrelated features like a character’s physical abilities.

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario’s grab.
Some other changes include:
– Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
– Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.
