system update

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a must-have game on Switch. If there’s one thing to criticize though, it’d be the game’s technical performance. Specifically, Breath of the Wild sometimes experiences frame rate drops. Some players have even experienced the screen freezing for a second or two.

Zelda isn’t actually the only game with frame rate issues. FAST RMX and I Am Setsuna both have problems with resolution drops and frame rate fluctuations respectively. However, an anonymous third-party developer has told Nintendo Life that the situation is resulting from a known issue with Switch’s Wi-Fi connection which places additional load on the processor.

One of the site’s readers, JunkRabbit, also provides the following explanation:

Nintendo will be expanding friends functionality in the future, the company has revealed. In a statement provided to Polygon, information was shared about other ways in which you’ll be able to connect with others.

First, Nintendo is planning on having users from social networking services be listed as friend candidates similar to Miitomo and Super Mario Run. You’ll also be able to send a friend request to those associated with your Nintendo Network ID (Wii U / Miiverse) and 3DS. Last but not least, select games will let you “use an in-game interface to send friend requests.”

Nintendo’s full statement reads:

Switch’s first update went live a short while ago, and GameXplain has now uploaded some footage showing what’s new, including a better look at the eShop. View the video below.

Update: Japanese update notes are up, confirming that it’s pretty much about stability. When the English notes are published, they should say: “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”.

We’ll update this post when Nintendo publishes the official update notes. Given recent version changes though, don’t expect too much other than improved system stability.

Update: Updates notes are in, and Nintendo didn’t surprise us! It’s the standard line: “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”. There’s been talk about the previous version causing issues with SD card corruption, so perhaps today’s patch addresses that.

Following last week’s firmware release, the 3DS has once again received another update. Version 10.5.0-30 is out now.

Nintendo has yet to share any notes about today’s update. Once they’re available, we’ll add them in here. I’d be surprised if it’s anything beyond improved stability though!
