Nintendo of Europe shared more details about Devil’s Third in an announcement shared today. The “wild, larger-than-life military thriller” will offer “intense single-player and multiplayer third-person action that blends modern military weaponry with brutal melee combat.”

First, below is an overview of the single-player campaign:

At the heart of the single-player campaign is Ivan, a former mercenary let loose from his incarceration to right the wrongs of his past and take down a shadowy terrorist group he once belonged to. With the world’s satellites and electrical weaponry having been wiped out, and warfare once again reduced to close combat between soldiers, Ivan must use a colourful array of weaponry to shoot, hack and bludgeon his way through any foe standing in the way of his attempt at redemption. With fast-paced combat and bone-crunching finishing moves galore, a day in the life of Ivan is anything but ordinary…

And multiplayer:

The game’s online multiplayer mode, meanwhile, offers up a grim future whereby the terrorists have won, and chaos reigns supreme. As an ordinary citizen, you can join a clan and help reclaim the United States by forming allegiances with other factions, or go all-out as a mercenary and endlessly assault other player’s bases, opting for anarchy over clan diplomacy! But at the heart of the online play is the ability to customise your base alongside other members of your clan, with successful battling resulting in rewards that can be used to improve your defences. With constant assaults from other clans, you’ll have to be on your toes to defend your territory.

Another important note: for the European release, Devil’s Third will be available only with English voiceover, with choice of English or French on-screen text.

Many expected Devil’s Third to resurface at this year’s E3, but Nintendo appears to have had other plans. The game has reappeared through a brand new video on the company’s Japanese YouTube channel, which features brand new footage and talk from creator Tomonobu Itagaki.

Devil’s Third also has a Japanese release date. The title is coming to Wii U on August 4.

People’s Daily was recently able to speak with Tomonobu Itagaki from Valhalla Game Studios. In one question, Itagaki was asked about how his team will will work the Chinese mobile game market into their strategy. That doesn’t have much revelance here, but he did end up discussing the upcoming Wii U title Devil’s Third and how it incorporates the elements of war.

Itagaki’s comments are as follows:

We always seek to innovate in games, and so it means they will not be the same. We’re currently working on a game called “Devil’s Third.” It is different than previous games up until now, as it is not just about fighting, but about diplomacy and forming treaties in the midst of a war in a realistic world setting. All of this is mashed up into one game. It is a world where peace is sought. My colleagues and I worked to put all this within a “war game.” Eventually it became a household game for the Wii U, but we are currently developing games for mobile too.

Devil’s Third was re-revealed as a Wii U title at last year’s E3, though we haven’t seen it since. It’ll be interesting to see if it appears at E3 2015 next month.

Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki talked up the Wii U game a bit more on his personal Facebook page.

There’s nothing too major here, but Itagaki does mention that you should use the Pro Controller while playing Devil’s Third. He also mentioned how it’s much different compared to what was shown back in 2011. That makes sense given what we saw during E3 last year.

Tomonobu Itagaki has taken to Facebook and has shared another status update for Devil’s Third.

Itagaki said that Devil’s Third is “an unprecedented massive shooter to be played by tons of players”. He adds, “The game contains a lot of elements well over the volume to be provided by two regular games.” Such a large amount of content means the game must be properly developed before it’s ready for launch.

Itagaki goes on to say that Devil’s Third “will be the biggest game of life for me and my colleagues”. The project required two years of concept work, plus four years for actual development.

Itagaki closed his update by thanking fans for their patience.

Tomonobu Itagaki is working directly with Nintendo on Devil’s Third. If the opportunity arises in the future, perhaps the two sides could team up again.

When asked by a fan on his Facebook page if he’d be open to revisiting a relationship with Nintendo on a future project, Itagaki wrote: “Naturally. I love their talent, their games!”

Another fan asked Itagaki if Devil’s Third has been completed. He explained in response:

“Haha, I really don’t know I have right to disclose about that lol. Many [people] are working hard for this video game industry, i don’t wanna offend anyone’s position.”

Tomonobu Itagaki is continuing to share a few details about Devil’s Third over on his Facebook page. Here’s a roundup of the latest information:

– Devil’s Third meaning has to do with music
– Might be referring to a “tritone,” a musical interval composed of three whole tunes or six half tones
– This is colloquially sometimes referred to as “The Devil’s Interval”
– Unknown right now if this is what he meant

On whether Devil’s Third will feature both a single and multiplayer campaign:

“We made this game for single play (campaign) and online online multiplay gamers. ‘Cuz I know I have to respond to expectations by both gamers. So, in fact, we invested double amount of resources than general development in this industry, to accomplish to develop this game. I can’t show you specific length of single play mode, ‘cuz we’re still tuning this game. But you can estimate the total length of single play mode, by my saying above.”

Itagaki also said that the specs for Devil’s Third, which includes framerate and resolution, are still being worked on.

Tomonobu Itagaki and the team at Valhalla Game Studios have been working hard on Devil’s Third since the game was last shown at E3. Their effort has payed off, as Itagaki told one fan on his Facebook page that the visuals have been improved.

Itagaki mentioned that the textures, weapon and environment models, and lighting have seen an upgrade. Ultimately, “it’s looking completely different now.”

Itagaki’s words in full:

The amount of progress we’ve made since then will surprise anyone.?Higher-quality textures, improved weapon and environment models,?better lighting… it’s looking completely different now.

That’s not all Valhalla has changed in Devil’s Third. The assignment of buttons have been modified, and the HUD UI has changed.
