Splatoon 2

Despite being a demo, the Splatoon 2: Splatfest World Premiere has received an update. If you downloaded it previously, version 1.0.1 is now available.

Nintendo hasn’t made any sort of patch notes available, so we’re only left to guess what’s new. Given the small increase in version numbers, it’s likely nothing too big. That being said, it does seem like the construction we mentioned for the Japanese demo is here now in the English version…

The Splatoon 2: Splatfest World Premiere demo is gearing up for the big event this weekend. The Japanese version has seen some changes, and it looks like “construction” is now underway for the rock vs. pop battle. This hasn’t been reflected yet in the western version of the Splatfest World Premiere, but likely will be soon.

Update (7/12): Pre-orders now live on Amazon UK.

Original (7/10): Last month, Nintendo and HORI revealed a special Splatoon 2-themed headset for Switch. We now know that it’s coming west thanks to a listing on Amazon.

The Switch Splatoon 2 Splat & Chat Headset is based on an in-game item. By using it, you can experience in-game sound and voice chat at the same time while playing online. It has a removable mic and interchangeable decorative plates.

Pre-orders are open on Amazon here. The headset releases on July 21, just in time for Splatoon 2.

Splatoon 2 has a new mini-game called Squid Beats 2. Located in Inkopolis Square, you’ll need to press the right buttons while notes travel across the screen. Footage of two songs – New You and Shooting Starfish – Turquoise October – can be found below.

Marie is your new guide in Splatoon 2’s single-player mode. When you’re not battling Octarians in the various levels, you can catch up with her for a quick chat. But be warned: she’ll get annoyed with you if you keep pestering you. Oh, and Marie isn’t a fan of pineapple pizza, it seems.

Now that Nintendo is distributing final copies of Splatoon 2 to the media, Digital Foundry is back with a new techn analysis for Splatoon 2. The game has not only been improved compared to the original game on Wii U, but also back when it was originally shown a few months ago.

What’s interesting is that Splatoon 2 offers an adaptive resolution. It can go up to 1080p – higher than Wii U – but also lower resolutions like 1536 x 864 and 936p. The adaptive frame rate is for both docked and portable modes.

Update: More footage added below.

Original: We have several minutes of new footage showing the single-player campaign in Splatoon 2. Have a look at the gameplay below.

If you’ve played around with the Splatoon 2: Splatfest World Premiere demo a bit, you might have stumbled upon the food truck run by Crusty Sean. You can buy different types of food there which gives you a variety of bonuses, such as increased experience earned in multiplayer battles. However, you can’t buy this food with money – instead, you need meal tickets. In the Splatfest World Premiere demo, it’s not really clear how to obtain these tickets. The Splatoon Twitter account has now revealed they can be gotten in Hero Mode and in Salmon Run. Like the special pieces of gear that can only be obtained in Salmon Run, this is another example of how the various modes interact with each other and how rewards earned in one of them can help you in another.
