“Videogame makers know that in order for portable game machines to take the next step forward, they need wireless communication. We are discussing this with various players.” – NTT DoCoMo President Ryuji Yamada

Yamada wouldn’t specifically identify who NTT DoCoMo has been in contact with, but one would think that the company is talking to Nintendo and Sony. What he did say is that a component could be included in hardware which would access NTT DoCoMo’s 3G network or connect to their routers that use a 3G connection to create a local Wi-Fi network. We know that Nintendo is looking to enhance wireless/online functionality with the 3DS, so might their next handheld support 3G?

Miyamoto on how long the 3DS has been in development/what the process is like behind the scenes…

“Basically the way it works is – once we’ve finalised the design for a new hardware system and we’ve launched the hardware system, the hardware teams immediately begin research on what the next system will be. So it’s been – I don’t know how long – I guess about six years since we launched Nintendo DS, so they’ve been researching and experimenting with various things over the last six years, but it really finally started to take this shape that we see now about three years ago.”

Miyamoto on why this is the best time for Nintendo to introduce a new 3D system…

“Well, there were kind of two things that led to it. First of all, the LCD screen technology has really advanced quite a bit over the last few years, and that played a big part in it. The other is obviously – as you pointed out – we’ve experimented with 3D a lot over the years, and in all the experiments that we did, with the sole exception of the Virtual Boy, everything else that we worked on was really 3D as a peripheral or an accessory to an existing hardware system. And what’s unique about a portable gaming device is that because it’s both a gaming system and a monitor, both together in one device, there is no accessory. What that means is everybody who purchases the device is able to experience the 3D effect, so it was kind of this combination of us focusing in on the idea of a portable device as a 3D device, and the fact that the LCD screen technology had advanced to a point where it was finally going to be possible to do it.”

“If I could come across everything that I played I would have to go with Chrono Trigger. I think Chrono Trigger was one I really enjoyed. It’s tough because a lot of the Japanese RPGs have very specific functions for everything. There is very specific item progression, very specific class progression, very specific everything. I think… I don’t know I’d have to think about it. I think it would be fun to take the setting of a Japanese RPG, which is a weird mix of fantasy and sci-fi mashed together and make a Western RPG out of that,” Urquhart chimed in. “I think that would be cool. I mean it’s kind of Star Wars, that’s kind of what Star Wars is a fantasy in space. I think that would be interesting.” – Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian

“I think we’re going with Chrono Trigger because it has elements of a Western RPG. It’s more open, it’s still mostly linear, but there are parts you can explore more. There are lots of differences, like you can beat Lavos at different parts of the game and you get different endings based on that. There are obvious answers like dialogue trees and all of that good stuff. The seeds are there for that kind of development.” – Nathan Chapman, Lead Designer

Hmm…As much as I respect Obsidian, I just don’t know about letting them work on a new Chrono Trigger. I think I’d rather see Square Enix handle the title internally.

A few days ago, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono teased a new project on his Twitter account. Ono only stated that Super Street Fighter IV “is nothing compared to what’s coming.” While it still isn’t entirely clear which title he was referring to, there is a small sign that it could be a new Darkstalkers title.

Last Monday, Ono noted that he had a proposal to give to Keiji Inafune. He said that his presentation was a success a day later. When a fan asked if he could make a Darkstalkers/Vapre game, Ono said, “I’m left speechless yet….. Shhhh.”

There have been a number of different indications recently that Ono would love to make a new Darkstalkers title. Since there seems to be huge interest there, it seems more than possible that an announcement will be made sometime in the near future.

Yoshi Ono has worked on some significant titles in his career, including the recent release of Super Street Fighter IV. But apparently something bigger is on the way. Ono posted a brief, cryptic message on his Twitter account, about something that will soon be coming:

“Super SF4 on sale!! SuperSF4 is nothing compared to what’s coming!!”

That really isn’t much to guess on, though hopefully we’ll see some sort of announcement in the near future. There honestly isn’t a clue here at all. Though if it’s Nintendo related, you can bet we’ll let you know about it!
