Until the 3DS starts selling, no one, particularly critics, is going to stop talking about the system’s performance. The 3DS has a whole lot to live up to thanks to the stellar sales of its older brother, the DS.

Three months into the 3DS’ lifecycle, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime believes the company has rectified two issues holding the handheld back: the lack of an outstanding Nintendo franchise and the absence of numerous online functions.

Fils-Aime told Kotaku:

“When we launched, we had a fantastic day one and a very strong week one. We talked to consumers. Consumers were highly satisfied with the device. They loved the built-in applications. They loved the game experiences. We had high levels of awareness. We had high levels of intent-to-purchase. But when we started talking to consumers who were aware or interested, but hadn’t yet bought, they told us two things: first, I need a big Nintendo franchise for our purchase. The second thing was I need the network to be up. I need the connected experiences to be there. I know those were the two factors, based on the consumer information. So now we jump to where we are. We’re going to be launching Ocarina. We’re going to follow with a steady drumbeat of Star Fox and Kid Icarus and two Mario titles and the Luigi title. I think we’ve got that issue not only identified but addressed. We’ve just done the first network update. We’ve got the eShop up and running. We’ve got the 3D movie service still on track for the summer. We’ve got Netflix still on track for the summer. So I think we’re well underway to having that addressed as well. My expectation is that with the adjustments we’ve made, we’re going to be back with strong momentum on the 3DS. The system did not launch earlier than planned. We thought there would have been a tighter gap between launch and the first network update.”

And how about that video service that Nintendo promised awhile back? It’s on the way! Fils-Aime reconfirmed that Nintendo Video and Netflix are coming this summer.

“There will be music videos. There will be 3D movie trailers. There will be Nintendo-curated content, things we believe are interesting that, candidly, we’ve helped finance. I am actively involved in all of that content identification. … It’s going to be fun.”

Looks like North American Club Nintendo members weren’t the only ones having issues ordering their free soundtrack. Nintendo of Europe has sent out the following release…

We would like to update our Club Nintendo members who have attempted to register their The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D title with Club Nintendo over the weekend in order to take part in the bonus soundtrack CD promotion.

Unfortunately, we encountered a technical issue with our Club Nintendo website and this resulted in an error for some customers when trying to claim the promotional soundtrack CD from Friday afternoon until today, Monday, June 20th. This issue is now solved, but we would like to extend our sincere apologies to all Club Nintendo members who encountered this problem.

Our The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D CD Soundtrack promotion continues to run until June 30th, 2011. All European Club Nintendo members may register for and receive a bonus soundtrack CD until that date. We will be in contact soon with Club Nintendo members who registered their software, but were not able to enter their details for the soundtrack CD, with information on how to proceed in order to receive the CD.

Sakurai on the new direction gameplay-wise and thematically for the game…

“Interestingly, the genre came first and then Kid Icarus and Pit were fitted into that later. Initially, Nintendo and Mr Iwata came to me with a request to create a game for the new portable system. I had a proposal for a game where a character would fly – for air shooting, then would land and battle on the ground, in the same way the game is set up right now. In discussing that, we realised that Kid Icarus and Pit would be a perfect match, so that’s how it came about… we were able to use the design of Pit developed in Smash Bros; to incorporate him into the game.”

This information comes from Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada…

“This hasn’t technically been announced, it’s not actually in the company lineup, but as the creator of the game, I’d like to have it out sometime this year.”

Man, if this comes out this year, 3DS owners will really have a great selection of fighters to choose from. There’s Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, and even BlazBlue. And in just a few months, Tekken might be added to the mix.
