A couple of videos are now available for Splatoon’s new Rainmaker mode.

First, here’s some footage from GameSpot:

And an official video from the Squid Research Lab:

Speaking of the Squid Research Lab, here’s an official overview of Rainmaker:

Introducing…. Rainmaker! In Rainmaker, both teams compete to snag the, uhhh, Rainmaker. Once you’ve got it, the goal is to carry it into the other team’s base!

How’s it work, you ask? As soon as the battle begins, grab onto that Rainmaker! It’s guarded by a shield, though, so you’ll need to bust it out first. Once you snag it, head for the other team’s base. And be quick about it!

If you run out of time or get splatted, the Rainmaker will be dropped and its shield will also reactivate. The Rainmaker is crazy heavy, so you can’t Super Jump while carrying it. Hopefully your teammates will watch your back!

But don’t think the Rainmaker is just some shiny object – it can shoot ink like an Inkzooka. You can even hold to charge the Rainmaker up for an extra-powerful shot! The closer you get to the enemy base while holding the Rainmaker, the lower your goal distance will drop. If you retreat too far while holding the Rainmaker, it’ll explode sooner! If the battle ends without anyone carrying the Rainmaker to the goal, the team with the lowest goal distance will win.

Eurogamer recently spoke with Xbox boss Phil Spencer. When the site asked if exclusive games are needed to sell hardware and pointed out the Wii U should be selling more if that’s the case, Spencer responded:

On the Wii U, I think people downplay how many units they’ve sold. I’ve got a Wii U, I think there’s some great games on there. I think Splatoon’s a really nice game and I don’t think there’s a first-party out there that has the strength of IP that Nintendo has. They’re always a beacon to me when I look at what it means to build a first-party portfolio of products, they’ve done a great job.

This isn’t the first time Spencer has praised Nintendo. Back in January 2014, he also spoke about the company’s franchises with high regard.

Bandai Namco might be working on its third Taiko no Tatsujin for Wii U. A new domain name on the publisher’s Japanese website, which should be updated once an official announcement is made.

You may recall that Taiko no Tatsujin Tokumori was leaked in a similar manner. Soon after its domain name was discovered, Bandai Namco unveiled the title.

Walmart is now taking pre-orders for Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. Reserve a copy here.

We’ve heard that Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival will be a free download on the Wii U eShop, but the retail version comes with two figures and three cards. I assume that you’ll also be given a game disc!

This week’s GameStop ad has gone live. You can find it in full below.

Update: The Super Mario Maker amiibo page is now fully updated. The Animal Crossing amiibo cards should work (thanks NicoRobin!).

We have one last piece of important news coming from today’s Super Mario Maker trailer. Over 50 amiibo are supported, including Link, Wii Fit Trainer, and Kirby.

The official amiibo website indicates that all existing and upcoming figures work with the game, with one exception: the Mii Fighters. It’s also unclear if the Animal Crossing amiibo cards will be compatible.

At launch, Super Mario Maker players won’t be able to experience everything the game has to offer. New content will need to be unlocked over a series of days.

As revealed in today’s trailer, spending at least five minutes with the creation tools unlocks more course elements and themes for the following day.

Here’s what things look like on day two:

And on day nine:

Today’s Super Mario Maker revealed a brand new element of the game: sound customization.

Players can eventually unlock the sound effect frog, which lets them drag sound effects into the editor. It’s also possible to create entirely new sound effects. A demonstration in the video seemed to show the player talking into the Wii U GamePad, and then using their voice in-game.

Here’s the news about Super Mario Maker’s sound effect options straight from Nintendo:

New sound effects and music block customisation – You can create your own sound effects in Super Mario Maker, with some sounds even generating fun visuals! And by shaking a classic Note Block during level creation, it becomes a Music Block. When something activates one of these Music Blocks, it will play a note based on its height, allowing players to arrange songs of all types.
