Miyamoto suggested Pac-Man inclusion for Smash Bros. Brawl, Sakurai thought it was “a little too farfetched”
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News, Wii | 6 Comments
Pac-Man is joining the Super Smash Bros. series for the first time through the upcoming Wii U and 3DS games. However, it turns out that the classic character could have been included in the previous entry, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Masahiro Sakurai wrote in the latest issue of Famitsu that Pac-Man was a possibility for Brawl courtesy of a suggestion from Shigeru Miyamoto:
“During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, ‘Can’t we have Pac-Man as a guest character?’ At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm… That’s a little too farfetched.'”
Sakurai also mentioned in his column that coming up with character ideas for a Smash Bros. game may seem easy, but it takes a great deal of work to implement on the development side.

Philips wins patent case against Nintendo in UK
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News, Wii | 23 Comments
Reuters is reporting that Philips Electronics has won a patent infringement case against Nintendo in the UK. It’s the first of four lawsuits filed against Nintendo.
In a statement, Philips spokesman Bjorn Teuwsen said:
“It’s about a patent for motion, gesture and pointing control that we make available to manufacturers of set-top boxes and games consoles through a licensing program. We’d been trying to come to a licensing agreement with Nintendo since 2011, but since it didn’t work out we started legal action in Germany and the UK in 2012, France in 2013 and in the U.S. last month. We’ve requested fair compensation for the use of our patents.”
Philips did not share information regarding possible financial implications from the ruling.

Aonuma reflects on Zelda: Skyward Sword’s tutorials, will be careful with them going forward
Posted on 10 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii, Wii U | 9 Comments
One of the more common complaints with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword concerned the game’s tutorials. Many felt that there were too many of them, especially at the beginning.
This is something that series producer Eiji Aonuma has learned from. Aonuma told Kotaku that he now understands “that when you go out and buy a game, you buy the game because you want to play it, and you don’t want to have any obstacles in the way.” Additionally, he admitted that Skyward Sword’s tutorials were “frontloaded”.
Aonuma said this was all “a real learning experience for me”, and he’ll “be careful not to do that.”
