Mother 3 has never been published in the west. But with Nintendo’s semi-recommitment to the series with the recent EarthBound Wii U Virtual Console announcement for the west, perhaps it has a chance of one day heading westward.

The localization process could be eased through a fan project completed in 2008. Clyde Mandelin, who led the efforts and has been known for his work at FUNimation, is now offering the entire translation to Nintendo for free.

Mandelin wrote in a blog post:

I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it’ll help in even the slightest, I’ll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free. I’ll even edit the files to fit whatever new standards are necessary (content, formatting, memory size, etc.), completely for free. I’ll even retranslate everything from scratch if need be. Just whatever it takes to get an official release out.

It might seem unlikely for a legitimate company to use a fan translation or work with fan translators, but it has happened before – Ys: The Oath in Felghana is one recent example. It’s more common among visual novel games at the moment, but I believe this sort of thing will only become more and more common over time. Only when the works in question are up to a certain standard of quality, of course.

This sounds pretty good to me! We’d love to see Mother 3 in the west…

Square Enix already released a remake of Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland. Could the company now be working on a remake for its sequel?

In Japan, Square Enix registered a trademark for “Iru to Ruca no Fushigi na Fushigi na Kagi”, a move that could suggest a remake of Dragon Quest Monsters 2.

Square Enix originally distributed two versions of Dragon Quest Monsters 2. The remake would likely encompass both.

One of a number of 3DS games on sale at Best Buy this week is Paper Mario: Sticker Star. The game can currently be purchased for $19.99 as opposed to $39.99.

Other 3DS titles discounted at Best Buy include:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate – $29.99
FIFA Soccer 13 – $29.99
Angry Birds Trilogy – $19.99
Wreck-It Ralph – $19.99

A few months ago, a Wii U listing of the Karateka remake popped up on the ESRB. The game’s launch came and passed… yet there was no news about it heading to the eShop.

We contacted the game’s developer to find out just what was happening, and whether or not Karateka would ever arrive on the Wii U.

Producer Heather D’Evelyn told us that Karateka was considered for the platform “at the beginning of the project but never went into development.” D’Evelyn added that there are no plans to bring the game to the Wii U at this time.

This makes you wonder why Karateka was ever listed for the Wii U on the ESRB, doesn’t it? Ah well…

Thanks to Timmy for the tip.

LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins is out now in North America. If you’re looking to purchase the game through the eShop, you’ll need roughly 5,900 blocks of space on an SD card. That’s fairly small compared to some of other recent retail releases!

A few big titles came out on Nintendo platforms last month. Arguably the most significant was Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which launched on both the Wii U and 3DS.

In roughly three weeks, Ultimate moved somewhere between 100,000 and 130,000 copies on both platforms. The 3DS picked up 60% of the game’s sales while Wii U picked up the other 40%. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is now 13th all time on NPD’s Wii U lifetime software chart.

Other NPD estimates include LEGO City: Undercover (more than 100,000 copies, but less than Ultimate on Wii U and 3DS), Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (less than 10,000 copies), and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate (around 30,000 units).

Nintendo will be launching the Wii U Virtual Console as well as the system’s first of two big updates in the coming days. It’s just a matter of when.

Findings on Nintendo’s website and Facebook page may give an indication as to when both of the above-mentioned items will be available.

First, Nintendo posted an image to its Facebook page on Saturday suggesting that the VC will begin in three days. That would set the service’s arrival for April 23:

There’s also a listing for Excitebike on Nintendo’s official website mentioning an April 23 release.

During the most-recent Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata said that the Wii U VC would be available a day after the new system update is prepared. Does this mean that the firmware will go live on Monday followed by the VC on Tuesday?
