Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. art director on how the game’s visuals changed during development
Posted on 9 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News | 1 Comment
It took some time for Intelligent Systems to settle on the visuals for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Speaking with USgamer, art director Takako Sakai explained how the style changed throughout development.
Originally, the team wanted to “recreate the same pen touch” found in American comic art. But “some visual elements made the game a little bit harder to play”, which led Intelligent Systems to make “some light revisions” – resulting in the graphics we see in the final code.
Sakai’s full comments are as follows:
When we set out to recreate the feeling of [American] comic art, and tried to recreate the same pen touch—that kind of feeling to the actual stroke… We noticed that some visual elements made the game a little bit harder to play. So we made some light revisions there, and landed on the style you see in [S.T.E.A.M.] now. At first, we [created] a color palette that was really faithful to the printing technology of the time. But once implemented, we found that it did make the game a little bit hard to play in some situations. So we made adjustments as appropriate—as little as possible—as we went. And where we ended, you’ll notice the enemies have sort of a colder, bluer palette to them, whereas your allies have a warmer palette—a lot of orange and red.”

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. details covering Marth and Ike amiibo usage
Posted on 9 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in 3DS, News | 1 Comment
Destructoid has put up an article with a few details about how the Marth and Ike amiibo come into play in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Find them rounded up below.
– Can use Marth and Ike once the character select screen is available
– Simply tap them down after pressing the “amiibo” button on a New 3DS system
– Fire Emblem characters are available until they die in battle
– Revive characters after the mission is over
– Marth’s main power is Destiny
– This lets him avoid Overwatch counter-attacks from enemies, which is balanced out by his main statline
– Marth can use his falchion (his core melee weapon)
– He can also use a less steam-costly rapier
– Rapier is less powerful, but more precision-based
– The rapier has the added benefit of bringing an Overwatch counterattack to the table, and it can hit weak points for a bigger steam-to-damage ratio
– Marth and Ike can’t use sub-weapons
– Marth has a low defense rating and a lower HP pool
– Marth also has an area-of-effect (AOE) heal
– Ike has almost 50% more health than Marth
– Ike has a larger steam pool and a better recharge rate
– “Push” can be used by Ike to move crates or enemies
– Ike’s main blade is Ragnell, which has a weak ranged ability
– Ike’s secondary weapon is Urvan
– This is an axe weapon that can hit multiple enemies right in front of him
– Ike has no Overwatch abilities
