Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight

Atlus’ latest update on Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight covers the RPG’s “Grimoire Stones”. Information about the feature is posted below, in addition to a new trailer.

Tell me if you’ve ever been in THIS nightmare scenario: your party is whittling down a mini-boss, and the encounter is going well! Everyone’s health is a little low but it’s manageable. The killing blow strikes down the mini-boss in the nick of time, but upon his death, 5 trash monsters take his place. Normally they’d be a cakewalk, but the healer’s head is bound, the main damage dealer and the ranged damage dealer are out of TP. Everyone but the tank is wiped out by the 5 trash mobs, but he won’t last against all 5 of them.

IF ONLY HE HAD A HEALING SPELL OR A MULTI-TARGET ATTACK!

Enter Grimoire Stones – equippable items that bestow the user with new skills, even enemy ones. So in the previous situation, your Tank could have an all-target attack Grimoire Stone equipped and have wiped out those monsters instead of losing the fight.

The Grimoire Stone system from Etrian Odyssey Untold has been completely overhauled. Regina in the cafe will be able to help players equip, trade, and recycle Grimoire Stones. Trading Grimoire Stones is as simple as picking any of the passing explorers in the cafe and striking up a deal with them. Players will be able to see how good their offer stacks up, and once it hits 100%, the deal is done! You can keep adding to the deal if you need to make up some ground, so it’s a good idea to keep those low-level Grimoires around.

Regina can also help with recycling Grimoire Stones. Select the Grimoires you don’t plan on using, offer them up to Regina for recycling, spend some time in a labyrinth and voila – a new Grimoire! Like trading, you’ll be able to see the level of the Grimoire Stone Regina will be able to produce…the more you add in, the higher level of Grimoire you can get.

Grimoire Stones also bestow new weapon skills on characters; so if you want your Protector to use a Highlander’s spear or if your Troubadour wants to go all Indiana Jones with a whip, Grimoire Stones are the answer!

Atlus uploaded a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight today. In the video, we get a look at Flavio the Survivalist.

Continue on below for the new Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight trailer as well as an overview of the character straight from Atlus.

At first I was bound, I was petrified!
Kept thinkin’ I would never live
Without Flavio by my side…

And I was right, because instead of showing him the door as in Gloria Gaynor’s disco masterpiece, players should welcome Flavio the Survivalist to their party with open arms in Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold’s story mode! Flavio (and Survivalists in Classic mode) is a deadly archer that can inflict a number of status debuffs on monsters in the Labyrinth, not to mention he has access to “Flank Shot” early on, which does damage to multiple enemies.

True to his class, Survivalists also have some dodge-tanking skills in the form of “Trick Step” and “Chain Dance.” The former skill lowers an enemy’s hit rate, and the latter raises the Survivalist’s target and evade rate. The hilarious “Scapegoat” skill lowers incoming damage to an ally, but forces them to act as a shield for the whole party.

For strategic Survivalists, Risk Perception skills will help Flavio reveal chests and F.O.E.s, raise the party’s sneak-attack rate, and even lower the encounter rate while in dungeons.

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight is launching in North America on August 4, Atlus has announced. Like all of the company’s games, this one will be sold both in stores and on the eShop.

For those who haven’t heard about Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight previously, here’s a handy overview:

The first-person dungeon crawler from the classic Etrian franchise is updated with an all-new standalone story, complete with voiced characters who must adventure through the mysterious forest labyrinth and the ruins of Ginnungagap, where they may uncover the secret origins of the Fafnir Knight and his power to transform and use demonic powers.

The story mode is only half of the game, as Classic mode will allow players to play in the traditional Etrian fashion – by putting a party together from 13 unique classes and then clawing through dungeons to prove your mettle. Introduced in the first Untold game, both Classic and Story modes allow players to choose their own difficulty, from Picnic to Expert.

The choice of whether to start with Story or Classic mode will be up to you, when Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight launches on August 4!

Atlus provided a new update on Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight today.

First, we have a new trailer for Arianna:

Here’s an official overview of the character:

Who says Princesses need saving? Meet Arianna, the Princess of Caledonia, and one of the five party members in Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold’s Story mode! Not one to wait in a tower and be rescued, Arianna runs straight into battle alongside her friends and helps them dish out the pain! She’s modeled after the Sovereign class, and has a strong balance of defense and support abilities, specifically passive healing!

As the Princess of Caledonia, Arianna must trek to ancient, mysterious ruins and complete a ritual to fulfill a royal tradition to save her kingdom. The abandoned ruins have become a home to a horde of dangerous monsters however, and your party will need to rely on Arianna for support in order to complete her royal quest!

Atlus is also preparing three 3DS theems for Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold. Images and information about them are posted below.

Nintendo 3DS Themes
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight will get three flavors of 3DS themes! The Story, Classic, and Café themes will all be available for 99 cents (CA$1.29) apiece and begin rolling out on a weekly basis starting July 14! As a special bonus, players who pre-order the game from GameStop will receive a free code to redeem the Story theme!

Atlus’ latest trailer for Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold provides a new look at the game’s Classic Mode. Watch it below.

And here’s the pertinent information regarding Classic Mode:

Unlike Story Mode, which has a fixed party and intricate storyline, Classic Mode gives players full access to character creation, as well as being able to customize characters using Grimoire Stones, which grant any character class to use another class’ skills.

One fun thing to note in the video, the background music is the “Classic” version as well, which uses the original Nintendo DS music. Like in the first Untold title, a newly added orchestral score can be selected from the options menu at any time.

Atlus’ new trailer for Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight shows off the game’s protagonist – a new element of the 3DS remake. Watch the video above, and read up on some information below.

When you start down the path of Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold’s Story mode (as opposed to Classic mode!), you take charge as the game’s protagonist — a sworn bodyguard of Princess Arianna! One of the first places you head to is called Ginnungagap, which naturally should be devoid of any monsters or anything else dangerous. Right? Right.

Oh wait no, this is an Etrian Odyssey game. Peril will come at you from around every corner, and that’s without taking into consideration the ever-present threat of FOEs ruining your day. Fortunately, not only is the protagonist a skilled bodyguard, but he also can harness the power of the Fafnir and can transform into a beastly demonic form to access new abilities in the heat of battle.

Of course, how he got this power and what it means is an entirely different story altogether; the only way to find out about it is to play through EO2U’s Story mode!
