Minecraft: Wii U Edition only just launched on the eShop last week. Despite that, it’s already tearing up the eShop charts in Japan. It’s currently the ninth best-selling game on the digital store of all time.

To reach the eighth spot, Minecraft will need to outsell NES Remix. Splatoon, Dragon Quest X, Pokemon Rumble U, Super Mario Maker, Art Academy: SketchPad, Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario World are the other games ahead of it.

A new update, version 1.8.8, was released for Minecraft on most consoles today. It adds new items, blocks, mocks, biomes, and plenty of other features. The patch is said to be Mojang’s “biggest update ever, bringing the console versions closer to the current PC build than they’ve ever been before.”

If you have a PlayStation or Xbox console, you can grab the patch right now. But unfortunately, Mojang says that it won’t be hitting Wii U “until some time next year.”

You can find a trailer showing Minecraft’s 1.8.8 console update below. The full list of additions are at the source link.

On December 17, Minecraft will finally be heading to Wii U. We have a quick look at the game now below.

I’ve never actually played Minecraft before, so I was kind of messing around more than anything! You can see the controls, look at the options, see some of the tutorial, and watch me doing random things in the Skyrim world for a tiny bit.

Nintendo’s Japanese page for Minecraft: Wii U Edition offers up a few more details about next week’s release. First, aside from the GamePad, players can use the Wii U Pro Controller. Voice chat is compatible, and USB keyboards are supported as a means of communication.

Minecraft: Wii U Edition won’t let players manage their inventory by using the GamePad. Instead, the controller simply acts as an alternate screen for off-TV play. So says Mojang’s Owen Hill, who tweeted the following yesterday:

This really feels like something that would make Minecraft much, much better on Wii U. Hopefully the functionality will be considered for a future update.

Details continue to trickle out about Minecraft: Wii U Edition. This time information, we have some extra information about how multiplayer will be handled.

Here’s some information straight from a Microsoft Studios blog post:

“Minecraft: Wii U Edition will have full play on the GamePad controller’s screen and split-screen play. As with the rest of the versions in Minecraft: Console Edition, it will support four players locally and up to eight players online.”

It’s definitely good to see that Minecraft’s Wii U version will be keeping in line with other platforms. No compromises!

In North America (and presumably Europe), Mojang is publishing Minecraft: Wii U Edition. But that’s not the case in Japan. Microsoft, the new owner of the IP, is publishing the game directly over there. Kind of makes for an interesting situation!

Minecraft: Wii U Edition was announced as a Wii U eShop title earlier today, but it will also be sold in stores down the road. Mojang’s Kristoffer Jelbring confirmed the news on Twitter while responding to a fan question. A release date for the physical version has not been determined, as Jelbring said it will be offered “at a later date.”
