Will there ever be a Mother 3 localization

The past couple of months have been both great and terrible for EarthBound fans. On one hand, we’ve received so much — a huge wave of Porky merchandise and plushes, a bunch of EarthBound icons for Nintendo Switch Online profiles, and even a release of Mother 3 on the Switch’s Game Boy Advance lineup. The problem is that Mother 3 release was only in Japan.

There’s a lot of discussion surrounding a potential Mother 3 localization – it seems to become a talking point every few years, mainly around the game’s anniversary in April. Though there are far more reasons why Nintendo wouldn’t want to release Mother 3 in the west, there are a couple of (admittedly quite hopeful) reasons that a localization is still possible. Today, we’re breaking down all of the reasons why. We’ll be discussing some light spoilers here, so if for some reason you’re avoiding them, please keep that in mind before you continue reading.

Mother shop

A new shop for the Mother franchise will be opening in Japan. Starting this month, fans will be able to purchase merchandise based on the Nintendo series.

Mother no Omise, otherwise known as Mother’s Shop, will first open in Osaka at Umeda Loft’s stationery market on the 6th floor. The Hobo Nichiyobi store on the 8th floor of Shibuya Parco in Tokyo will then have access. Dates are planned for November 19 to December 6 in Osaka and December 14 to December 27 in Tokyo.

Among what can be purchased at the shop is the Mother no Kotoba script book and the biggest plush ever made for Mr. Saturn, which is knee-length sized. Other merchandise includes the Franklin Badge, towels, and bead charms. There are also smaller plushies planned for Master Belch and Mr. Saturn.

Nintendo’s Mother series hasn’t had a lot of news in recent years, but that’s starting to change today. New initiatives are being planned as part of the Hobonichi Mother Project.

The first update concerns a book containing every piece of dialogue from the franchise. It’s tentatively planned for release by the end of this year.
