Pikmin 4

pikmin future

In a new video we’re sharing today, we’re thinking about the future of Pikmin.

At this point, the series has been around for a couple of decades. For some reason though, it doesn’t feel like it and Pikmin still feels fresh to me – maybe because there are only three mainline games (a number that Splatoon is already reaching in seven years). Nintendo seems to be very fond of the IP, promoting it outside of the main games with animations, a 3D spin-off, and now the recently-released mobile title Pikmin Bloom.

With all of this in mind, in today’s video, I decided to talk about the current situation of the series: eight years without a new game, a lot of reports about a “Pikmin 4”, a recent port of Pikmin 3 for the Switch, and now a new mobile game. What do you think lies ahead for the future of the Pikmin series? Watch the video below and share your opinion in the comments.

A couple of years ago, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that Pikmin 4 was “very close to completion.” However, we’ve yet to see the game at all, and some have been concerned that Hey! Pikmin was the project he was referring to.

Eurogamer caught up with Miyamoto at E3 this week and asked for an update on Pikmin 4. There’s no need to fear, as Pikmin 4 and Hey! Pikmin are separate.

Regarding Pikmin 4, Miyamoto teased: “I’ve been told not to share anything about this from PR, but I can tell you it is progressing.” Nintendo also told the site separately, “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.”

It’s been a while since we heard anything about Pikmin 4, which was reportedly “very close to completion”. Game Rant caught up with Shigeru Miyamoto at E3, though, and asked him about its status. His response:

Yes, you are right, and we’re working on [Pikmin 4]. So, you know, when we’re in development we have to create a list of priorities and it has been hard to kind of fit that into that list, but we’re hopefully starting to see that on the list now.

Hopefully the game hasn’t been put off too long.

More:

Pikmin 4 is in development, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed.

“It’s actually very close to completion,” Miyamoto told Eurogamer back in July. “Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.”

Nintendo also added the following in an official statement: “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.”

Miyamoto didn’t say which platform Pikmin 4 is planned for, but NX is certainly a possibility.
