It was confirmed last week that Sonic the Hedgehog will be having its own panel at SXSW later this month. An additional blurb from the expo teases “a special reveal” that will be made for the series’ 25th anniversary.

Here’s what it states:

“Yuji Naka (Sonic Original Creator), Takashi Iizuka (Head of Sonic Team), Roger Smith (Voice of Sonic the Hedgehog), Mike Pollock (Voice of Dr. Eggman), Austin Keys (Sega), Aaron Webber (Sega)

25 years had to go fast, and here we are today wondering where it all went. Join the original creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, along with the amazing production heads responsible for bringing the franchise to life, for an in-depth analysis of where Sonic came from and where he’s heading going forward. A special reveal will be made as part of the celebration for this anniversary milestone.”

TSSZ News actually says that the reveal won’t be a new game. If it’s something else, I’m not quite sure what it could be!

Nintendo has gone live with a new North American Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games 3DS commercial. View it below.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games can now be pre-loaded from the North American 3DS eShop. You can hop on over to the store, pay for the game in full, and download most of the data. When Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games releases in two weeks, you’ll only need a small update to begin playing.

Interestingly, there is no pre-load option for Pokken Tournament as of now. Usually Nintendo makes this functionality available two weeks before a game launches, and it’s coming out on March 18 just like Mario & Sonic. It’s unclear if Pokken Tournament will have a pre-load before release.

Our latest look at Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on 3DS provides a look at the soccer mini-game. Get a look at the latest video below.

Did you know that one of the characters in 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is inspired by Jet Set Radio Future? After a Siliconera reader noticed that the male agent had a Graffiti Soul and “JSRF” t-shirt on, the site confirmed with SEGA that this is a nod to that very game.

Character designer Miwa Shirow is actually a fan of Jet Set Radio Future. With the Agent class, she wanted to create a character that looked like a “street-wise youth,” in particular due to the fact that the class relies on various “conditions aligning in combat.” The male agent’s internal name also goes by the name “Jet.”

It’s also worth mentioning that for one of the buttons on the Agent’s chest, it’s a symbol from Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratori Tangram. This 3D fighting robot title came out for the Dreamcast.

SEGA is celebrating Sonic’s 25th anniversary with a panel at SXSW panel on March 19. Original Sonic creator Yuji Naka and Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka will be in attendance, as well as other guests such as Roger Smith (Sonic voice actor) and Mike Pollock (Dr. Eggman voice actor).

Here’s an overview of the event:

“Sonic the Hedgehog is turning 25! After racing to the scene in 1991 on the “SEGA Genesis,” the little blue blur has seen it all: the great evolution of gaming – including the rise of online and mobile – international expansion, multiple TV series, and an ascension that’s made him an icon and veritable mascot of gaming itself. This panel will take an in-depth look at his Sonic’s rich history across gaming, TV, merchandise and more, giving fans an inside glimpse directly from key figures in Sonic’s history. Join us as we celebrate the past and look to the future!”

The Sonic the Hedgehog: 25 Year Anniversary panel will take place from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games debuted on 3DS in Japan on February 18. During its first week (through February 21), the game moved about 44,000 copies. Dengeki also reports that Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games sold through 80 percent of its initial shipment.

How does that stack up to the series’ last entry? We don’t have a sell-through rate for that one, but Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games sold 45,000 units in its first week before going on to sell 267,000 copies total. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games seems to be on a similar trajectory.
