Shinya Takahashi

Today, a new interview with Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi was published on The Guardian. As one of the leaders at the company, he spoke about taking risks, Nintendo’s approach to development and its hiring process, the union between hardware and software teams, and trying to surprise players.

We’ve rounded up the interesting comments from the piece below. You can find The Guardian’s original article here.

The Wave Race series has been dormant for a very long time. We’re closing in on two decades since Wave Race: Blue Storm, which came to GameCube in 2001.

Could Wave Race finally return on Switch? There are no promises, but Nintendo managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi – who has played a large role with the console – seems interested in the possibility.

Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi was on hand for the BAFTA Games Awards earlier today. After the event wrapped up and the company took home a few awards, BBC briefly conducted an interview with Takahashi.

To begin, BBC asked how it feels to be a part of Nintendo’s comeback. Takahashi said in response:

To celebrate Switch’s first anniversary, Nintendo has published a new video interview with Shinya Takahashi. Takahashi weighs in on the system’s first year, his favorite kart in Mario Kart, and more. Watch the full interview below.

The time between Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey was four years. Super Mario 3D World came to Wii U in November 2013, while Mario Odyssey launched last October.

Since it took several years for a new Super Mario game from EAD Tokyo and Odyssey arrived in time for Switch’s first year, some have wondered if the title was ever in development for Wii U. Nintendo ruled that out in the latest issue of Game Informer.

The lifecycle of Switch was a prominent topic discussed during Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing. President Tatsumi Kimishima, managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi, and Shigeru Miyamoto weighed in on year two and the system’s future in general.

Kimishima once again spoke about the importance of year two. In 2018, Nintendo will focus on games featuring Switch’s concept of playing “anytime, anywhere, with anyone” and “encourage consumers to discover their own ways of having fun.” Kimishima added that Nintendo “will release a series of products, including some not announced today, and continue to create games like Nintendo Labo that people look forward to playing.”

During the Q&A section of its latest financial results briefing, Nintendo was asked about the design concept for Switch’s Joy-Con. Senior executive officer Ko Shiota, managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi, and Shigeru Miyamoto all weighed in on this.

Shiota said that the “Joy-Con was designed from the start of development as a device that could have a variety of uses besides being a game controller, including the possibility of attachment to something else for play.” Nintendo also thought about the Joy-Con could be used by setting it in an attachment. Takahashi later added that Nintendo “considered play using just the hardware and software, as well as play in combination with other things.”

Nintendo Switch

During the Q&A portion of Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing, the company was asked about any issues / risk factors now that weren’t considered before launch. This prompted managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi, senior executive officer Ko Shiota, and Shigeru Miyamoto to talk about the need to increase the appeal of Switch to all age groups, regardless of gender.

Miyamoto commented on this as well, and said something interesting. Nintendo wants each individual person to own a Switch as opposed to every family in general.

An update on Nintendo Switch Online was financial provided during Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing. We finally know that the service will be launching in September.

During the Q&A session of its financial results briefing, Nintendo commented on this just a bit further. Both president Tatsumi Kimishima and managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi weighed in on the service, with Takahashi stating that the next announcement will be worth the wait.

The two stated:

Nintendo surprised everyone last month with the announcement of Nintendo Labo last month. Going after kids and kids at heart, Nintendo Labo will allow Switch owners to make creations out of cardboard and then use them with compatible applications / mini-games.

Using cardboard may have seemed out of left field, but it ended up being a natural fit. Nintendo commented on the entire Nintendo Labo project including the reception and the decision to feature cardboard.
