Understandably, third-parties and retailers have been overjoyed by the announcement of the 3DS price drop. Satoru Iwata shared some of the reactions that he has received thus far.

The 3DS’ original price was a cause of concern for third-parties. Before, publishers made comments such as “Even if they are interested in this game, they can’t buy it,” or “We placed a big bet that the 3DS would sell without question, and are a bit disappointed.” With the new price, these publishers have been saying, “We’re extremely relieved” and “This will definitely sell.”

On the retail side of things, Iwata confirmed that there will be lower retailer profit margins. Although this is something that cannot be prevented, retailers will benefit from the overall growth of the 3DS market. As we detailed previously, one North American retailer told Iwata that “It’s like Christmas has come early!”

In case you can’t tell, I took the photos and video above with my camera (via the eShop). Unfortunately, the content didn’t come out as well as I hoped. Still, it’s somewhat viewable and it’s all we have for now! SEGA should be sharing direct-feed versions of the screenshots and trailer soon…

Mike Wikan, one of the key staffers at Retro Studios since the studio’s early days, has left the company for id Software. Wikan participated in the development for all three Metroid Prime titles. Last year, he led the Donkey Kong Country Returns team in boss and enemy creation.

Wikan’s LinkedIn profile reveals that he left Retro in May and joined id Software in the same month. This ends his eleven-year tenure as Senior Game Designer with the company.

We knew that Satoru Iwata recently touched on digital downloads/DLC and how Nintendo feels it’s important. Now we have a few more details from Iwata’s Q&A session. Here’s a rundown of what he outlined:

– Paid item transaction system will be available later this year
– System also in the works for Wii U
– Nintendo might not use the system for itself
– Iwata said that paid download content would probably increase short term profits but wouldn’t let them build a long term relationship with customers
– Nintendo believes they shouldn’t have this type of paid charge system for their own games
– Iwata isn’t against the concept in general, though questions the concept of free-to-play games in which you play a game for free and then have to buy items
– He feels that this would damage the premium value of Nintendo’s content
– 3DS Internet connection rate far beyond the DS
– This rate still isn’t at a 100% satisfaction level
– Only a fraction of these users are purchasing download paid content
– Iwata hoping the eShop will have a larger presence over the next three years
– Iwata wants this to amount to a more drastic change than something like increasing ten percent from the current five percent
– Nintendo will be working on a future where players will pay for digital content just like normal with no reservations over the next three years
– Nintendo won’t be leaving packaged software
– Iwata hopes digital business will be another pillar for Nintendo

StreetPass Quest 2 isn’t the only new feature Nintendo is considering for the 3DS Mii Plaza. Satoru Iwata is aware that there isn’t much left for most users to experience, so they’ll be looking to update the software by the end of the year to add new functionality.

Iwata added that there are several games in development that will incorporate Miis that 3DS owners have created on their systems. Nintendo will introduce this software starting this year and into 2012.

On Thursday, Nintendo revealed that 3DS owners who connect their system to the eShop by11:59 p.m EDT on Aug. 11 will be eligible to receive ten free NES games and ten free GBA games. So far, they’ve only confirmed that Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong will be available as part of the GBA downloads.

Has Nintendo of America outed a couple of additional titles? Here’s an email sent out by a customer service representative:

I have a feeling that the Super Mario Bros. 3 listing is just an error since that was probably mixed up with Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3. However, I’m not quite sure where that Kirby inclusion comes from. It’s also strange to see that Mario vs. Donkey Kong isn’t listed…
