The WiiWare demo program, although successful, was strangely halted in North America and Europe after just one batch was released. Wii owners were able to test out titles such as World of Goo and Bit.Trip Beat for a few months, but the sample downloads were removed towards the end of January. It seems the program may be making a return, however.

A number of different WiiWare developers have apparently told NintendoLife that the Big N recently started accepting submissions for a new wave of demos. It seems that the downloads will remain on the Wii Shop Channel until Christmas, at the very least. Hopefully this is a sign that we’ll start seeing demos more frequently in the future.

– Miyamoto: “It’s not the case that I have hobbies in the hopes of making a new game.”
– In an interview between Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi, Itoi joked that he and Iwata talk often about Miyamoto’s involvement with his “neighborhood association”
– Miyamoto mentioned his neighborhood association involvement back in July at an investors Q&A
– New project created from his community work
– DSiWare application being made to allow people to easily “make their own DS download service”
– Use the DSi’s camera and mic to record voice and image samples
– Edit the samples, send them out to other DS owners
– Example: Stamp rally at a neighborhood committee meeting
– Miyamoto thinks the app could be used by retailers, such as a coffee shop owner using it to display a menu and shop introduction, then customers would be able to access the service from their table
– Similar to a do-it-yourself version of the navigational/promotional services that are at museums, shopping malls, and McDonalds
– Releasing in Japan this month

– Miyamoto believes that the range of players narrowed a great deal when Super Mario become Super Mario 64
– Miyamoto also believes that Nintendo’s developers successfully used the strong points of 3D to deliver new game experiences, but they also continued working on games that can be played by everyone in 3D
– The above led to Super Mario Galaxy
– Doesn’t completely solve the problem, though, which is why the New Super Mario Bros. series exists as well
– “When asked ‘what will we do on 3DS,’ the answer is, of course, we’ll make both [2D and 3D Mario titles]. They both have their own appeal.”
– 3D type of Mario game (which also applies to Zelda), it isn’t always easy to perceive depth
– Can see more clearly what’s closer to you with the 3D effect
– Miyamoto feels that the 3DS’s 3D effect also “gives a great feeling of existence to Mario, Link and others”
– This is important for Miyamoto’s games since they’re made with character “weight” in mind (making the player feel like the character has weight in its movement)
– Regarding 2D Mario games, Miyamoto noted that depth-based effects are already present in many of the games, such as a Wiggler or Bullet Bill flying at the screen from afar
– Miyamoto: “It’s difficult to tell when they will hit the player, so we were only able to use these lightly. However, we’ll be able to use this type of thing quite a bit on the 3DS.”
– Iwata: “You went more in-depth than I’d been expected. This is the first I’ve heard of this.”
– Miyamoto in response to Iwata: “No good? Don’t tell any game magazine people.”
