IGN published a preview from Sonic Lost World, which reveals the first details about the Wii U and 3DS game. The information covers new and old returning elements, GamePad bits, and a confirmation that the 3DS version will also feature full 3D levels.

Details and screenshots rounded up from the preview can be found below.

– Mix of 3D and 2D mechanics
– Abstract levels
– SEGA has shown three levels thus far
– Twist, turn, and jump along floating constructs suspended in mid-air
– Levels are now informed by gameplay needs, with some stages focusing on slower speeds with more platforming, and others pushing players to run as fast as possible
– Areas include Wind Hill, Desert Ruins 1, Desert Ruins 2
– Desert Ruins 1 consists of cakes, cookies, donuts and all manners of candy
– Desert Ruins 2 features an entirely different gameplay style
– Desert Area 2 offers the “tunnel racing” concept from previous games
– Controlling Sonic’s speed and a “Parkour system” were two key elements that were thought of during development
– Parkour system: allows players to automatically accommodate basic obstacles when he’s running
– Team’s greatest challenge was maintaining a sense of speed for the series while finding controls that made sense
– By default, Sonic doesn’t burst off with a tilt of the analog stick
– Sonic walks until you use one of the GamePad’s triggers to engage his running speed
– Need to hold down the second trigger to pull Sonic into a ball, giving him access to his full momentum
– Iizuka compares this to the ‘Boost speed’ from previous titles
– By creating a tiered structure to movement, Sonic Team is hoping players will be able to navigate the wide range of level designs, exploring and running as necessary
– GamePad is used to activate various Whisp-based “Color Powers”
– These feature touch-based controls and are mostly used to gain access to side paths and areas
– Support Mode: one player uses the Wii U’s tablet to assist a second player who is controlling Sonic with a Wii remote and nunchuck
– Only control Sonic
– Friends such as Tails, Knuckles and Amy will make appearances in the story
– Story: Sonic chasing after Eggman and finds a mysterious floating island known as “Lost Hex”
– Sonic will run across the “Deadly Six”
– These foes will bring a “sense of danger and humor” to the story
– Sonic will save animals throughout levels
– Rescuing animals are tracked level by level as well as cumulatively
– This aspect will factor into unlockable content
– Red Star Rings can be collected for unlockable content
– Gold cannons help you access hidden paths
– 3DS version will also have full 3D levels

Head past the break for a bit of commentary from producer Takashi Iizuka.

When I started Nintendo Everything in 2007, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into or what I was doing. In many ways, that still holds true. But I can say that the daily routine of updating the site (and later two sites when GE launched) brought me great joy – there’s something about sharing news updates with other enthusiastic gamers that never gets old.

Since joining the blogosphere, I unfortunately haven’t been able to fully devote myself to NE or GE due to other obligations. My time has been sapped away time and time again. But for the first time in, well… ever, I’m free to dedicate my complete and total effort to both sites. These years have been filled with an insane amount of rushing and lack of time needed to make NE and GE the best they can be, but the situation is much different now.

It’s safe to say that the folks at Shin’en are technical geniuses. They’ve consistently managed to get the most out of Nintendo systems, even when difficult limits have been in place – like WiiWare’s 40MB cap.

While the Wii U has been lambasted for its low power compared to other next-gen systems, Shin’en feels that what Nintendo’s console offers is quite enough – especially compared to Wii. Shin’en Multimedia art director Martin Sauter told GameReactor in a new interview that instead of focusing on power, “we need better games.”

Sauter said:

Of course the Wii U is not the big leap hardware power-wise but it is a big leap to the Wii and to be honest I think we’ve reached a point where we don’t need so much more hardware power – we need better games. For every game you can make it look so good that it’s good enough for everybody and I think the Wii U is a good compromise between price point – because don’t forget you have a tablet controller, you have a great hardware base and it’s much better than everybody reads. It’s better than Xbox – sorry, it is better – and you can squeeze lots out of it, but you have to really work hard on it and I think you can make great games with it.

I’m not sure if a much more powerful PS4 will produce much better looking games. We’ve reached a point where good games will sell and I think the steps will be much much smaller in the next generation.

Soraya Saga recently retweeted Nintendo’s Japanese E3 Nintendo Direct message. For those who are unaware, Saga is Tetsuya Takahashi’s wife – one of the leading staffers on “X”.

The last time Saga retweeted Nintendo Direct news, “X” made its first appearance – that was at the end of the January presentation. Could the anticipated Wii U game be appearing on the upcoming broadcast?

Capcom’s Christian Svensson addressed a bunch of different fan points about the Ace Attorney series in a new forum post. You can find his remarks below. For complete clarity, we’ve included the full comments from fans (bold) along with Svensson’s words.

A few months ago, a new game from Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid was outed through a trademark filing: “Treasurenauts”. The studio has, for the most part, been keeping quiet about the project.

This month’s issue of Nintendo Force finally offers up some information. The magazine interviewed Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham, who shared all sorts of interesting details about the 3DS eShop game.

Here’s a roundup of his comments:
