Wii U

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U features “secret” audio clips known as Palutena’s Guidance. By playing as Pit in the Palutena’s Temple stage and pressing the down taunt at the right moment, you can hear conversations about the different characters on the roster.

Interestingly, one hidden audio clip on the disc was recently discovered. Listen to it below:

What might this be about? Is it a generic placeholder? Something more?

Another new Koji Kondo interview has popped up online, this time coming from GameSpot.

Kondo was asked about a number of topics. He answered some general questions as well as ones that were a bit game-specific. Naturally, Zelda was one of the franchises GameSpot brought up.

When asked if The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will feature music that is mostly the same as the original, Kondo responded:

Actually, with Majora, we thought it was really important to protect the feeling of the game because the music was tied so well to the original gameplay. We’ve done some clean up on the audio quality, but the music itself we haven’t changed.

We did some rebalancing, of course, to make it sound good on the Nintendo 3DS. Before you were hearing it out of you TV speakers, and we just needed to do some rebalancing for that now that it’s on a handheld.

Here’s a look at the North American boxart for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. No angry Kirby!

The online experience in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS will continue to be improved. However, director Masahiro Sakurai has indicated that there will not be any additional balance patches.

Sakurai told Famitsu in this week’s issue:

—In the future, do you plan on adjusting or balancing the game further through a patch?

Sakurai: We don’t have any such plans, but at the very least we will be working on a few things connected to the online play experience, bit by bit.

If we were to do something like tweak characters’ customized special moves, then there’d be no end to it. But with that said, if there are any glaring issues, we may address them.

—That’s because with customized special moves or items, you can only play with them enabled online with players who are in your friends list, isn’t that right?

Sakurai: When playing with your personal friends, I think it’s probably more interesting that you can almost cheat a little through customizing your character. *Laughs*

Update: There’s been some confusion about the situation. It actually looks like you need to have your console registered in five days rather than the digital copy. Since Nintendo encourages people to link their Club Nintendo accounts early on, most users shouldn’t encounter any issues.

Those who register Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS on Club Nintendo will receive two bonuses next year. Nintendo intends to hand out a soundtrack CD as well as free Mewtwo DLC.

If you’ve purchased Smash Bros. digitally, make sure that you have the games registered within five days of purchase by linking your system to Club Nintendo. You won’t be eligible for the promotion otherwise.

With the recent release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and the 1st and 2nd wave of amiibo, I have started to reflect on how these little NFC “Figure Players” have added an entirely new dynamic to the series that we’ve never had during this franchise’s history. With the addition of the amiibo we’re given an array of new possibilities that add depth and scope to a game that already had quite a bit for a brawler, and even with other companies having already released similar types of “toy” peripherals we are seeing a whole new side to what the future might hold for video games.

NeoGAF’s “creamsugar” has come through with a new set of sales data leaks from this month’s NPD report.

First, let’s talk about software. Sonic Boom is off to a rough start, as Rise of Lyric only moved 25,000 copies in its first month. Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on 3DS apparently sold even lower.

On a somewhat brighter note, Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth sold around 48,000 units last month. That’s not too bad considering the game launched during the very last week of November and was up against anticipated titles like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Finally, we have news about the limited edition New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS XL. Consumers snatched up 140,000 of these handhelds in the U.S. last month.
