During a Nintendo financial briefing this week, one investor brought up how “external factors such as the introduction of new hardware by competitors and the rise of mobile gaming have impacted” its business. With new types of entertainment coming through, president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked to comment about the “kind of risks need to be considered going forward”.
Nintendo is doing better than it ever has before, but that doesn’t mean the company is resting on its laurels and conducting business with urgency is a priority. Furukawa said that hardware transitions “are not an easy task,” and he acknowledged how “we never automatically assume that our current position is solidified.” The overall goal seems to be “the importance of continuing to implement initiatives that encourage people to feel familiar with Nintendo in areas other than dedicated video game platforms, increasing the number of consumers who are fans of Nintendo IP over the long- term, and maintaining our relationship with these consumers.”
One of the questions that popped up during Nintendo’s financial results briefing Q&A this week is what the difference has been between Switch and the company’s past platforms, and what is being emphasized in its research and development of a next-generation platform. President Shuntaro Furukawa weighed in.
Furukawa brought up how Nintendo now has an integrated a handheld system and a home console system. By implementing that, Switch has been able to receive a steady stream of content.

Furukawa stated at the event that the game “served as a major driver of sales”. Additionally, the title’s sales “have grown at a faster pace than previous Super Mario titles.” As another tidbit, Furukawa revealed that around half of players play in multiplayer mode.

Nintendo president on the positive impact of The Super Mario Bros. Movie on its revenue and business

According to Furukawa, The Super Mario Bros. Movie contributed to the mobile and IP related business seeing a big increase year-on-year. He explained:
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has weighed in on the current Switch performance while briefly giving a few vague comments on new hardware. This comes from the Q&A portion of the company’s financial briefing.
Furukawa described Switch sales as “stable” and “the holiday season results were steady.” He again pointed out that reaching new consumers is a challenge given the age of the hardware, but it’s worth noting that the holiday season saw “a particular rise in first-time buyers of our hardware, and we see this as a positive sign for the Nintendo Switch business going forward.”
