Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Digital Foundry has conducted a preliminary technical analysis on two Wii U games: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2.

With Mario Kart, Nintendo has noticeably bumped up the resolution to 1080p. An issue from the Wii U version was also addressed with frame stuttering.

Splatoon 2’s visual improvements over the original may be less obvious due to running at the same 720p resolution. However, playing Splatoon 2 on the Switch screen can be impressive. Nintendo could also choose to increase the resolution before launch.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe features additional content over the Wii U release. But those hoping that the game will include new race tracks will be disappointed to hear that the amount remains the same.

During a stage show at Nintendo Switch Experience 2017, Nintendo confirmed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe contains 48 tracks. That’s the same amount as the Wii U version (with the DLC courses included).

As far as what’s new, Nintendo revamped Mario Kart 8’s Battle Mode, and the game also features some new characters and vehicles. There’s also a new Smart Steering feature to make driving and staying on the track easy for novice players, returning items from past entries, and the ability to carry two items at once.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will consistently run at 60 frames per second and 1080p when docked. When Switch is in portable move, it’ll still remain at 60 frames per second, though at 720p. Nintendo shared that information during its Treehouse Live stream today.

It should be noted that when playing with more than two people, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does rearrange its configuration. The game is still at 1080p, though 30 FPS.

Tom Phillips of Eurogamer is currently at the Switch preview event in London, and he has snapped a picture of the character select screen in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It seems likely that all of the characters were unlocked for the purpose of the preview event and won’t be available right from the start in the retail version, but it’s nonetheless nice to have a look at the complete roster.

Mario Kart 8 is getting an upgraded version on Switch – and so is one of the controllers compatible with the original version. Just like the Wii Steering Wheel, which you could slot a Wii Remote into, the Switch is getting its own steering wheel-type controller. It seems like either the left or the right Joy-Con can be placed into the slot in the middle of the wheel. There are also two shoulder buttons located on the back of the wheel:
