Mighty No. 9

After a long and tumultuous development period with multiple delays, Mighty No. 9 will finally be released next month. To prepare for that, developer comcept has started sending out platform surveys to those who backed the game’s Kickstarter project; backers can select their platform of choice with those. These e-mails are being sent out over the course of several days, so be patient if you don’t get yours today. Backers have until May 29th to fill out this survey – if you don’t complete it by then, you will be sent a Steam key for the game by default.

Mighty No. 9 has been given a release date – a final one, we hope. It was announced today that the game will be available on June 21 in North America/Asia and June 24 in other territories.

Of course, this date only applies to the Wii U version. The 3DS version will follow at a later date.

Here’s the full message from Keiji Inafune:

To all of our backers and fans of Mighty No. 9,

Firstly, I would like to say again how sincerely sorry we are for how long we have kept all of our fans waiting. We are finally able to deliver some long awaited news regarding Mighty No. 9. We have now confirmed the following release dates for Mighty No. 9: June 21st 2016 (North America & Asia) and June 24th 2016 (World Wide). We understand that as a result of the various delays we have disappointed and let down our fans, but we are happy to finally be able to deliver the game to everyone who brought us this far.

With the game having “gone gold” we are in the last final stages of being able to deliver it into your hands, be that via your favorite retail outlet, or via digital channels.

Mighty No. 9 has suffered through several delays. The last time we heard about the game in an official capacity was in January, when it was pushed back to “Spring 2016”. Could it now be seeing another delay?

A display at EB Games is currently showing Mighty No. 9 as launching in “Summer 2016”. That’s most definitely not a confirmed time frame, but it is a bit concerning. There were actually rumors earlier this week about Mighty No. 9 possibly being moved back to December, although it was later proven inaccurate.

What’s maddening about this all is how little we’ve heard from the Mighty No. 9 team about the situation. If the title is still on track for spring, you have to wonder why things have been so quiet. The end of the season is less than two months away after all!

After its phenomenal success on Kickstarter, Mighty No. 9 has had a somewhat troubled development period, with multiple delays and lukewarm receptions to its gameplay. Today, an e-mail was sent to backers of the project from Keiji Inafune himself, informing them that the game would not be ready in time for its targeted release date of in February. Inafune cites bugs in the game’s network / online as the reason for the delay. The new release date is, for the moment, set as “Spring 2016”.

Here’s Inafune’s statement in full:

To the fans eagerly awaiting the release of Mighty No. 9,

Unfortunately, we have an announcement that will be very disappointing to all of you. In preparation for the February release of Mighty No. 9 we have been working hard with our partners to resolve any network issues and porting work necessary to publish Mighty No. 9 on the various platforms. However, the issues relating to the network modes were more critical than expected, and it has become apparent that we will need to delay the game from its February 9th release date. We have been working up until the very last moment to resolve these issues in order to make the February release, but it has become clear that we no longer have enough time to fix the issues and have everything prepared for release.

During a lecture at the Unreal Fest 2015 Yokohama Event, Keiji Inafune spoke a bit about Mighty No. 9. Japanese website Inside-Games relayed some of what was shared.

Inafune promised that Mighty No. 9 won’t suffer another delay. One of the big reasons why it was pushed back is because of the high number of platforms involved.

Inafune wouldn’t say that Mighty No. 9 is a complete success, as the game hasn’t been released yet. He feels that it needs to sell a lot of copies and many users playing it. Assuming Mighty No. 9 is successful though, there will be a sequel
