The Super Mario Bros. Movie confirmed for digital release on May 16

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be seeing its digital home debut tomorrow, May 16, Universal Home Pictures has announced. The film can be seen on digital platforms in the United States where you can buy or rent movies from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Fans will also eventually be able to purchase The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Blu-ray and DVD, but a release date has not been announced. Currently pre-orders are available at retailers such as Best Buy.

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has expressed interested in seeing a movie based on the series.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has again expressed interest in pursuing more Nintendo films in the future.
Japanese outlet Nikkei published a piece this week about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it includes some choice words from Miyamoto. Regarding the future, after asking fans to look forward to what comes next, he teased: “Nintendo is like a talent agency. We have plenty of other entertainers.”

We have the latest on the box office performance of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with the film now surpassing $500 million globally. With that, it’s become the biggest video game adaptation ever.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $260.3 million domestically. You can also throw in another $248.4 million internationally. The exact total is currently $508.7 million.

There’s more news about box office sales for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with reports coming in that the film is generating $204.6 million in the United States in its first five days. It beat out Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s $200 million Wednesday-Sunday opening.
For Easter weekend openings, The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.36 million) is behind Batman vs. Superman ($181 million) and Furious 7 ($161 million). The film is on track to set a new global opening record for an animated movie at $377.2 million assuming overseas is still at $173 million by tomorrow morning.

To say this is a field that Nintendo hasn’t explored much would be an understatement. After taking Mario to the big screen with a live action film in 1993, the company hasn’t done much with other adaptations. That finally changed this week with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was created in partnership with Illumination.

According to Deadline, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has seen several milestones and records broken for its debut. The film had the top animated launch day ever in eleven markets including Germany, Spain, Argentina, Central America and Austria.
The Super Mario Bros Movie earned $34.7 million through yesterday at the international box office. That along with Wednesday’s domestic debut puts the global one-day total at $66.4 million.

Deadline is reporting that Jonathan Krisel is in negotiations to direct the sequel to the Pokemon Detective Pikachu movie. Chris Galletta will be in charge of the script.
Krisel is known for co-creating, writing, and executive producing Portlandia. He was also the co-creator, director, and writer on Baskets, which appeared on FX. Galletta previously wrote the Kings of Summer.

A lot has been made about Chris Pratt voicing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. As the lead of the film, nailing that character and choosing the right actor for the role is one of the most important aspects of the whole project.
Aaron Horvath, one of the directors on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, recently explained why Pratt landed the role of Mario. He told Total Film magazine that it “made total sense” and he’s “really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart.”
